Kinsale to Dublin - Is this "doable"

Hello All! I'm a new poster but have been reading this forum for a few months.  Of course, everyone is quite helpful and I have learned so much.  We are arriving Shannon 2 Sep 08 and returning to the states via Dublin 14 Sep 08 in the PM.  I have our itinerary finished to this point.  We will be arriving Kinsale 8 Sep and spending the night.  If we get an early start the next day, will it be possible to visit Jerpoint Abbey, Cahir Castle and Rock of Cashel and spend the night in Kilkenny.  Next day head north to Glendalough and Powerscourt  following thru to Dublin to return our rental and spending the rest of our time there.  Should we also do Powerscourt this time of year?  I will await your suggestions.  Thank you.

The trip you are proposing is do-able, with certain caveats -- duration of visits, routing and other interests ...

In brief, a route of Kinsale to Cahir, stopping to visit Cahir Castle, onward to Cashel to tour the Rock and then onward to Kilkenney to spend the night.  You might even have time to 'swing by' Jerpoint before arriving.  It is even POSSIBLE that you  might be able to 'sqeeze in' a tour of Kilkenney Castle before it closes, but I have my doubts.  More likely than not, you would need to tour the Castle first thing the next AM, before heading out for Glenndalough, Powerscourt and Dublin.  They will be full days, but not impossibly so.

The devil is, as they say, in the DETAILS ...

I doubt you will have time to visit the Swiss Cottage, Cobh, Midelton, Waterford OR drive the 'Vee'.  Nor will you be able to search out Mitchelstown Caves, dally in Clonmel, not visit any number of interesting and delightful other sites along the way.

Tis the sad truth about visiting Ireland -- there is NEVER enough time.  hmm

Thank you Bob.  I've seen your name quite frequently and know you give good recommendations.  I realize you can't do everything, was just wondering if the drive actually was possible.  Will play it as we go what all we can do.  Thanks for the tip of doing the Rock the next morning.  Is Powerscourt a site not to be missed?

Hi, BRita:

I was in Ireland in May 2007, and my opinion is that since you are passing that way, you should not miss Powerscourt.  It's an estate with formal gardens the likes of which I had never seen.  My daughters (18 and 25) were awestruck by the beautiful landscaping, flowers, mountain view, etc.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

BRita,

Welcome to my forum! I am glad to see that you already have some excellent advice from everyone. As Bob says you can do the drives with no problems. It will just take time to see each place you stop at.

I second Marie's opinion of Powerscourt. It is one of Ireland's most beautiful gardens and the views are outstanding. It will still be lovely in Septmeber.

Thank you, thank you!  I was debating Powerscourt but now we will do it!  I'm sure you will be hearing back from me on other topics.  I'm so glad I found this forum.

We did Powerscourt in Sep 04 and loved it. I wouldn't miss it and would go back the next time in the area.

As Merle says, Powerscourt is one of Ireland's best gardens.
