The roads that are designated as N18, N14, etc. appear on the maps to be National Roads or National Highways. In computing driving time on these roads or highways, do you still use the 30 miles per hour rule? For instance, from Letterkenny to Bunratty shows to be around 220 miles. If you do all of the driving on the "N" Roads, is this still a 7.5 hour trip(using 30 mph) or is it somewhat less than that?
There are "N" Roads, and then, there are "N" Roads....
While there will be MANY stretches where you will comfortably cruise along at 60+MPH (or, 100KPH), there are LOTS of distractions along the way, like Donegal Town, Knock Shrine, Yeat's Grave, etc, etc, etc .......
I THINK that you will be hard pressed to complete the journey in less time, but it IS possible. Those are particularly GOOD roads, mostly the entire way, and most of the cities and towns are now BY-Passed, eliminating much of the traffic slowing bottlenecks.

Thanks. My main reason for inquiring is in case I had to make a mad dash at the last minute for an overnight stay prior to catching my flight home the next morning. My actual plan is from Letterkenny to probably Roscommon to overnight and then the next day to Bunratty and overnight there and catch flight the next morning. Just looking for a backup incase we got so involved we ran out of time.
If you have a morning flight from Shannon I really recommend staying nearby. Although you can make good time on the N roads you never know what you will find enroute. Roadworks or a flat tire can really put a dent in your plans. When catching a flight you need to err on the side of caution.
And if you are in a hurry you can be sure that every tractor and digger will be on the move....These are not motorways and most are not dual carriageways...
