we are currently in Germany on a three year assignment from the US. Our ancestry is from county Armagh (which I understand is Northern Ireland??). I'm a single mom and over here with my 16 year old son. I would love to show him where his roots are and have also emailed country Armagh themselves. They've been very friendly but I am no further in actually getting there.
Here is what I envision (or would like?): a smallish B&B in the country but with some "stuff" to do for a teenager, would like to take horseback lessons and take some horses out for a stroll in the gorgeous Irish countryside; perhaps something by the sea? Maybe go out on the sea on a boat.
I don't even know WHERE to begin to look!! Plus, I'm not really "loaded" if you know what I mean lol
Any help, suggestions or websites? We would like to stay for at least a week.
For genealogy in Northern Ireland, check out the Ulster Foundation. Also, checkout the Genealogical site established and run by the LDS, familysearch.org. These two would give you a good base for walking the ground. Preliminary research is key to not spinning your wheels once you hit the ground. Once you have a good idea of where in Armagh they come from, we can try to help you find the other things for which you are looking.
Welcome to my forum! Bit has started your out with some info on genealogy.
Armagh is not by the sea so you will have to branch out for that. County Antrim has a fabulous coast, so start some research there too. Have you looked at my "Getting Started" page on my website? It will help get you going in the right direction.
Most of us are "not loaded" either. We save up all year and scrimp so that we can afford our trips to Ireland. Perhaps you can open a special account just for your trip. If you are exchanging dollars for pounds, the exchange rate is not good lately. Approximatley $2 for one pound.
One thing I have been looking at is renting a self-catering cottage for a week in the Republic of Ireland near Armagh in Monaghan. That way I can stretch my dollar with euros instead of pounds on things like cottage rental, food, petrol, etc. Eating out is expensive so being able to cook some of your own meals will help with the budget.
