Just returned from our 3rd. trip to Ireland for a month! Had a wonderful time seeing new sites and visiting old ones.
Our first week was spent in the town of Dingle, on a peninsula in the West of Ireland. Such a cute little town with wonderful views of Dingle Bay and lots of things for picture taking around the peninsula. So much history in Ireland, wish we could see it all. Our self catering place was very nice and modern but too many stairs. We loved listening to the strong winds since it was all brick, we knew it would not blow down
Second week was in our "used to be" favorite spot - Bantry Bay/Ballylickey stable apartment on a huge estate. We love the quiet landscape, Bantry Bay, sheep wandering free around the whole estate and the lady who keeps all the apartments in tip top shape - Theresa... There were many things to see and do, using this as a "base" home. We love Skibbereen in the South part of Ireland - don't know why, but we do. Also, able to visit old places we have see before and new places we found. We found a very neat lead soldier factory in Macroom. Was a lot of fun and, of course, we HAD to buy a kit to make lead angels, & soldiers. The kits come with everything we need, including the paint. Watch out at Christmas!
Third week was our wonderful thatched roof house where we ended up staying for 2 weeks because of Dave's medical problem Had to cancel our place in the Burren, which made us a little sad -- missed seeing a lot that we had missed on our other trips). Thank goodness for such wonderful owners of the house when Dave needed medical help. She, Ann, got a dr's appt. the next day, medication and Dave was all cleared up with rest and 3 more visits to the dr. and one trip to the hospital. We still enjoyed the beautiful surrounding area. Drove back to Macroom and got another lead soldier kit, drove thru Cork - way too big - wanted to go to a black powder factory but the day was too long and we missed it. Loved going into Mitchelstown to shop and eat at a very good place and I can't even remember the name of the place. All in all, even with Dave's problems, we really enjoyed ourselves --- this is now our favorite place and we made reservations to return next May. Oh! There were two great thrift shops that we had a lot of fun in. The people who volunteered were so neat. One place had a guy who was from Ohio and had been in Ireland for 18 years - he was such a kick! Enjoyed visiting with him and the lady in the other shop. Got a lot of info from them both about where to go, what to see, and where to eat!
Fourth week we drove to the Cliffs of Moher to a rock shop we like a lot - didn't go to the cliffs again - drizzly day and the pics would not have been real good. Left the rock, shop, after getting some more neat things made of Connemara marble and just headed up the coast looking at all the neat sites and a place to eat and a B & B. Dave ate a wonderful lamb dinner and I loved my crab cakes - could not get over the sauce - YUM! There was a very nice old weathered man with stocking cap, at the end of the bar, having his beer/s and the waitress when we walked in. Really cute funky place overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and docked boats! Lots of people dropped in as we ate and it was fun hearing them chat with that good Irish accent!!! We found a very nice B&B just down the road and had a good nite's rest and good Irish breakfast and visited with the people who owned it till 2 p.m. and then headed off to Clifden in the Connemara area. The owners of the B&B gave us a lot more info on things to see and do, plus she went to the gym in the a.m., so we could sleep in and we had just gotten ready for the day when she got home.
In Clifden, we stayed at the Buttermilk Inn -- VERY nice place, very nice owners! Whole Inn was done in cows, in a beautiful way. Nice peat fire, neat people to visit - a LOT of people were in town for the annual Connemara pony show, parade, purchase, stud service, etc. Evidentially this was quite an event every year. The town was packed and we were glad to have a reservation. We met four Americans who had just come over for this event. When the parade and events started we left town and drove to Roundstone to our favorite shop. The man who owns the shop, makes the neat drums that are used in a group that play Irish music. Unfortunately, the shop was closed. Went to a shop nearby and got some really neat earrings that the lady made and painted out of metal. Dave stayed in the car and was able to get some neat pictures of different birds.
Left Clifden and took off to Galway Airport to get my name on the car's contract, due to Dave not being able to drive. Drove to Bunratty Lodge and stayed the nite and left the next day for home! Mary is such a sweet person; however, we were so worn out and tired we were only able to chat a short time.
I won't even go into our flight problems, but will say that the people in Ireland are such helpful, kind people. Youngka

With the exception of Dave's unfortunate illness, it sounds as if you had a great time!
I was surprised to read that Malachy's shop was closed down in Roundstone the day you went. I thought he never closed. Maybe I just go at the right time for it to feel that way.
I am glad that you enjoyed Croughmore. If Dave had to get sick anywhere, Croughmore on Ann's watch couldn't have been a better choice. I had forgotten you were staying at the Buttermilk! Have they added to their cow motif? For a time, guests would send them something cow related from their home country/state.
Was it O'Callaghan's Deli & Bakery by any chance that you were trying to recall in Mitchelstown? They've great baked goods and great eat-in menu, as well. It would be on the main road, right side, if you were heading towards Dublin.
Dave is on the mend and feeling better, I hope? I didn't realize you had done a hospital visit, as well. Poor dear! I was a bit concerned with your return trip, as a good deal of the airlines seem to be cancelling and/or delaying flights.
So sorry to hear about your husband's problems in Ireland. But I'm glad to hear he is well again and you enjoyed your trip despite it.
How wonderful to have a month in Ireland. It is everyone's dream. Will you provide links to your favorite cottages? I'm sure everyone would like to look at them for future ideas.
Thanks Bit and Michele for your comments. I do have to put the links for the cottages/B&B's. I didn't have the cards at hand when I wrote the email. Bit: Mularchy and Gifty, Roundstone, were probably at the parade in Clifden. You are right, tho, they usually don't close the shop....Yes, Ann, did job of watching over Dave. She is just so sweet, and Liam is so much fun. Buttermilk is still collecting cows, but I am not sure how many since you were there -- BUT there are a LOT. I just loved their cozy room with fireplace. O'Callaghan's Deli & Bakery--you got it! WHAT a memory. Food is still excellent as is the bakery goods. Waiting for 4 hrs. at Newark -- Continental left early each flight and had someone for the S.F. flight really yell at them. I didn't blame him -- they DID leave early. We had to wait for a man and his son to board. THEN, after the plane was pulling away -- they demanded to get off! By the time we took off it was one hr. late. We sure did have a wonderful landing in Portland, like floating on a cloud - don't know how the pilot did it?? I'll be back with sites for the B/B's and Self catering places..... youngka

Youngka,Glad to hear your trip was a success despite the obstacles. Don't worry about the Burren; it will wait for you, and you will get there. I love your comment about Skibbereen-- "We love it and don't know why but we do". I feel the same way about what I saw in Clare last autumn. The most unprepossessing locale was the one that left an indelible, but indescribable memory-sensensation on a person. It is easy to get hooked on the magic. I hope to make a longer stay in a few years and see how enhanced the magic will be. WC
WCOMALLEY, thanks for your reply. I think I just had an ahhh haaa moment. Now I totally understand Bit's word "magic". Thanks for jaring my poor brain. In that case, I have experienced a lot of magic and have enjoyed every bit of it! ---- No pun intended, Bit :) Going for another month in May '09. We WILL see the Burren at that time.... youngka

Thanks for the cottage recommendations. To have "hot links" in your post you need to click on "Advanced Editor" at the bottom of the reply box. That will pop up another box to write in and you can do all sorts of fancy things like bold, italics, links, etc.
Michele, Thanks a LOT for the info. I was wondering what that was for. I read the instructions on how to use the "reply" section. I kept trying to use the icons. There was that very nice restaurant and B/B on the coast above the Cliffs and I am still searching for the names of each in my paper work. youngka

They keep adding new things to the forum. Sometimes it is hard to keep up. You can use the icons in the advanced reply box. Try it. I think you will like it.
Hi, again, Here are some more sites to check out from our trip.
www.kinvara.com/accommodation -- Sheila Conneely, Proprietor. Very nice B/B on the Coast above the Cliffs. She is very flexible regarding breakfast and serves a wonderful one. We had a very good time visiting with her, as I mentioned in my posting, above, about our trip. She will, this Summer, be renting an apartment that is set aside from the house, but on her same propery
www.therockshop.ie Adam Johnson, Director. This shop is just below the Cliffs on the same road. There is a very wide selection of Connemara marble, salt lamps, jewelry, post cards - gift shop things in general. In the summer they also open their cafe which is in the same building. Bathrooms included.
www.offthesquarebistro.com Clifden in the Connemara Region. We always try to get to Clifden each year for many places but love this place to eat. Clifden town has many shops and restaurants but this one is our favorite. In the hotel, across from the large grocery store, you can find a wonderful dinner -- very nice setting -- and the place is called The Brown Room (Brown something), can't miss it. They have a very nice bar area also. Food is on the high side but excellent.
If you are in Roundstone, Connemarra Region, be sure and check out both Roundstone Ceramics & Malachy Kearns Roundstone Music, Crafts & Fashion -- books too!, and Roundstone Ceramics right next door - owned by Seamus Laffan & Rose O'Toole--(Handcrafted Stoneware & Sculpture and ceramics). The shop has lots of nice stoneware and jewelry enamel. Rose is sure nice and helps you with anything. The shop is small, but worth going to.

Sorry to put things in bits and pieces. Just got this information from the Shiela at Conneely's B&B. The place we ate in Kinvara was http://www.kinvara.com/eatpierhead.html. A bit pricey, but well worth the cost. This is where I got the wonderful crab cakes...... Youngka

Michele, this is the great place we stayed in Kinvara. www.conneelysbedandbreakfast.com Nice and cozy home and owners. Beds are very comfortable, and I think I wrote about how nice the sitting space is and the breakfast part of the room. The good was so good, and there was so much of it. check out the website.....
