Places to Stay in Midleton?

My friend and I are going to be in Ireland in less than two weeks and have one hole in our itinerary for a one-night stay in County Cork. We will be staying in Kilkenny, the night before (Thursday) and are booked to be in Dingle, the following night (Saturday). So now we have the unique challenge of booking a one-night's stay on a Friday night before a Bank Holiday. All of my enquiries into places in Cobh, Kinsale, and Baltimore (within our budget) have resulted in "no vacancy" and/or "two-night minimum because it's a bank holiday weekend" responses. And I'm trying to avoid Cork City - since everyone seems to say so.

So now I'm eyeing some "Farm Houses" in Midleton. Any suggestions?

TIA, Allison

If you have a good sense of direction, I wouldn't be afraid of Cork.  Last week we spent 2 nights in Auburn B&B, which is on the north side of the city.  Small rooms in the main home, with 3 large rooms in a building across the street.  All immaculate,  with friendly, helpful hosts. It's within easy walking distance to the city.

You could also try Blarney.  Michele has some recommendations there.

Good luck.

Since you've stated a preference to stay outside of Cork city, consider this:

http://www.caheraghhouse.com/  , located in Watergrasshill, just off the N8 about half-way between Cork and Fermoy.

I haven't personally stayed here, as it is a new, perpose-built B&B, but my 'regular' B&B operator has now retired.  We go to Watergrasshill every year (and have, since 1999) and it is a GREAT, small and hospitable village.

The Fir Tree is a nice, modern pub that's worth a visit if you enjoy a younger crowd, or there is a homey, older pub, directly across the road.  The N8 bypasses village center now, but there is easy acess to head North (toward Dublin), or South (into, or around Cork).  The South Ring Road via the Tunnel will get you to Kinsale, or onto the N71, to head into the West.  Blarney and Cohb are nearby (generally under 30 min. WITH traffic).

Can't imagine that the B&B would be so busy that they would require a two night minimum, as Watergrasshill isn't on the typical tourist's radar, but I think you might enjoy the rural feel.

At least, I always do... biggrin biggrin

I will be putting in enquiries for both of your suggestions - thank you!
Have either of you (or anyone else) had experience with the Inn by the Harbour, in Ballycotton? Any pluses or minuses to staying in that town?

moskitoh,

Welcome to my forum! The closest recommendation I have to Middleton is in Cobh. Bank Holidays can be a problem as many B&Bs want bookings for at least two days. Let me know if you would like the recommendation.
