Just a couple of questions.. From Shannon: Could we do part of Lough Derg, drive to Doolin, see Cliffs of Moher and Aran Islands in one day. If not, could we do From Doolin: Aran Islands and still drive to Dingle in one day?? not sure of mileage and how all this would take. I just want to see as much as I can. If we are doing Killarney and will spend time there and see Killarney National Park and Lough Leane, should we leave Lough Derg rather. If we dont do Lough Derg on that first day then I would love to see Bunratty Castle. Cant seem to fit it all in........help Thanks in advance
If you take the coast road to Doollin, you will drive past the Cliffs of Moher, so stopping enroute to Doolin is ideal to prevent backtracking.
A trip to the Aran Islands is a full day in and of itself. You would catch the Ferry out of Doolin, disembark at Kilronan on Inis Mor and then spend the day, or the better part of one, exploring the island itself. You have three choices for exploring Inis mor: Pony & Trap, Bicycle or tour van. I would recommend the Pony & Trap.
Unfortunately, something will have to be cut. I think jet lag will weigh in on your first day, as well. It is such a temptation, Ireland, there is so much to see and do. It really is a struggle not to give into temptation and try to fill every minute and hour. Its like being dropped off in the most awesome of chocolate shops with only two dollars to spend! However, if you don't leave open gaps, you will miss the spontaneous moments that fill you with the magic of Ireland.
Thanks Bit for your prompt reply. We will be arriving at midnight the night before from Spain so wont be jetlagged. I know that I must not try and fit it all in but with your experience, which of the places that I have mentioned so far would you do. We will be spending 8 days in Ireland and hope to spend 2 in Dingle, 2 in Killarney and Kinsale aswell. I desperately need some advise. help.........
Lough Derg is more about its several lakeside communities with spots for nice views and stops at shops (may owned by local craftspeople). It's real strength is in being able to enjoy the leisurely and scenic drive with stops in towns, pubs, shops and restaurants. To try and "squeeze it in" will leave you disappointed. I love Lough Derg, but I'd suggest saving for a trip when you have many of these other biggies checked off your list.
If you want a taste of Lough Derg, you could stop by Killaloe/Ballina and drive up to Tuamgraney and then cut across to Clare's western destinations. It's only a sliver, but it's pleasant. Here's a photo of a lookout above Ballina that I really enjoy:
Go to this website and get mileage not kilometers. Divide by 35 to get your travel times. http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes/ It takes time for your sightseeing stops too. Don't forget to budget time for them.
Just something to put on your radar: Sometimes weather prevents the trip from Doolin to the Aran Islands. It seems to be a little less reliable than the trip from Rossaveal. This happened to me in July, so I imagine it can happen anytime.
