Hi all... so since my last posting our travel dates have changed a bit, we are now going to attend the wedding outside of Galway first and THEN spend a week traveling around. You were all so helpful with suggestions and tweaks to my first itinerary, I'm hoping you will do the same to the new one...basically it's the same but in reverse...and less busy.
We have ideas of things to see and do in each of the towns: Galway, Dingle, Kinsale and Dublin but we totally welcome any ideas for things to do/see/eat on the drives between each of the towns. The journey is what we love most, so we are totally fine taking 6 hours to get some place when it should normally only take you 2. What routes do you recommend???
Aug 7 Thurs-arrive Dublin 10am, pick up car, drive to Galway ??any hotel/b&b recommendations for Galway proper?
Aug 8 Fri - move to Wedding hotel in Oranmore Aug 9 Sat - wedding at Kilcolgan Castle Aug 10 Sun - drive Galway to Dingle ?? I'm assuming the drive south is just as spectacular as you all said it was going north?? We can still take the ferry and see the cliffs right? ?? Any b&b recomendations IN the town of Dingle?
Aug 11 Mon - Dingle Aug 12 Tues - drive to Kinsale ??any '"MUST SEE's" on the drive from Dingle to Kinsale? We love to drive and stop and explore. Or any "must see" day trips from Kinsale? Aug 13 Weds - Kinsale ?? again... if you only had one chance to drive from Kinsale to Dublin...what you would make time to see?
Aug 14 Thurs - drive to Dublin ?? Any hotel/b&b recommendations in the Trinty College/Christ's Church area?
Aug 15 Fri - Dublin Aug 16 Sat - Dublin Aug 17 Sun - fly home 9am
Thanks for your help! I"m going to try to track down Michelle's book this week but I couldn't wait to ask my questions!
Yes, the drive between Galway and the Ferry down the coast road is spectacular no matter the direction.
Try St. Martin's B&B for lodging in Galway. It is set in a quiet area but close enough to walk to City Centre to experience the fun there.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, my favorite B&B in Dingle is Blooming Wildflower Cottage. It is situated on the harbor with parking across the street and right in town Centre.
I am sure Michele will chime in shortly but I didn't want to leave you hanging for too long.
My thanks to Bit for stepping in and helping while I was in Ireland. I am just back from 32 days there.
Have you had a look at my Lodgings page yet for accommodations?
On your first day it is a longer drive that I usually recommend people make. It may take you about 3 to 4 hours from Dublin to Galway. Pay special attention on the M50 as there is massive road construction and it can be confusing. Know where you are going in advance and study your map so you know the exit to get off at. Another suggestion is a train to Galway and renting a car there. Right in Galway I would recommend Park House Hotel.
The drive from Oranmore to Dingle will take the better part of the day, especially since you will be sightseeing along the way. Good idea to have two nights in Dingle so you can see the peninsula the next day. If you want something really, really nice in Dingle I highly recommend Emlagh House. If it is a B&B you prefer take a look at my Lodgings page.
There are so many "must sees" on the drive from Dingle to Kinsale it would be hard to narrow them down. Plus you are passing through areas of outstanding beauty that are generally given several days each. Probably the best advice is if the weather is good go through Killarney, Kenmare and the west Cork Coast. If the weather is horrible take the main N22 from Killarney to Cork and then go south to Kinsale.
Kinsale to Dublin:
Cahir Castle Swiss Cottage Rock of Cashel
Again, see my Lodgings page for Dublin accommodations.
If you click on the link under my name you can order my book online now and have it in a couple of days. No "tracking down" necessary.
