I am travelling with my wife on business to Europe on June 11th - June 18th. We are starting in London, ending in Paris, but we have 2-3 days that we plan on visiting Ireland. Our plan is to take the ferry to Dublin and then start our quick adventure. We plan to fly to Paris and leaving from either Dublin or Shannon is fine, although I'm worried about luggage???
I am a self-admitted arrogant American who is clueless on things to do in Europe, let alone Ireland. Any suggestions on the best places to stop on our short journey. We are young (late 20's), would like to enjoy the countryside, history, or scenery during the day, and then wouldn't mind seeing the pub-scene at night.
Is it best to stay near Dublin since we have such limited time, or is there enough time to explore the island. As for lodging, from a price standpoint, a bed and breakfast seems like the way to go, again, with a limited time of staying, is a bed and breakfast still a good idea.
Lastly, what's the best way to get around. Following the train lines, will there be enough to see, or is renting a car the best way?
Thanks in advance for your help and I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge.
To go from London to Ireland you will have to take a train and ferry or a quick flight. The former will take a long time. With cheap airfares a flight may cost less than a train and ferry and take a lot less time.
With your limited time you are probably better off just staying put in Dublin and seeing the city. If you want to see the countryside I recommend a trip south to Co. Wicklow to Powerscourt Gardens and Glendalough. There are few B&Bs in Dublin City. You should be looking at hotels. Go to my Lodgings page and Links page for more info on hotels.
If you stay put in Dublin you can get around by walking and public transportation. See my Transport page for more.
A couple of days will give you a brief taste of Ireland. Hopefully, you can visit again for a longer time and really see Ireland.
