Dublin B & B

Hello, this is my first post on this website.  I have a question regarding B&B's in Dublin.  Let me first state that I have Michelle's book, which is wonderful.  I am still just a bit confused on where to stay in Dublin.  Other parts of the country are easier, as it is not 'big city' travel.  My fiance and I are taking our honeymoon in August and were thinking of staying in a bed and breakfast in Dublin for the two nights we will spend there.  We thought of going with one of Michelle's recommendations, the Brookfield Lodge, but are concerned with ease of travel/distance from the city.  We found another B&B called the Abberley House in Drumcondra.  It looks okay on the website, and I'm wondering if anyone has stayed there or knows anything about it?  They say they are "one mile from the city centre in a quiet residential area."  Thoughts?  Thank you very much!  -Melissa

Melissa,

Welcome to my forum! The problem with Dublin is that for a B&B you generally have to look to the suburbs. In the high rent city center you will find hotels and guesthouses. I do have a list of hotels to choose from on my Lodgings page and the Quick Picks in my book. Bewley's Ballsbridge is a bargain.

Of all the B&Bs in my book in the Dublin burbs the one with easiest access to the city center would be Beechwood. There is a bus that stops just a few yards from the house that goes to the city. Or you can take DART from Malahide.

Someone did just stay at Abberly House and have posted about it in the Trips Report section of the forum. See: 10 Days in Ireland, Trip report by Loelle.

Michele,
Thank you for replying so quickly! I am sure that I will post again as I am really "digging in" at this point of my travel planning. We are headed for Dublin, the Galway area (haven't decided if we will stay in Galway or Doolin), Cork/Kerry, Waterford/Kilkenny, and back to Dublin. We are leaving on August 4 and returning on August 15. After reading your book and going through your website, I couldn't be more excited to spend my honeymoon in Ireland! Thank you for the tips on the Dublin B&B's!

Hi Melissa -
I am going on my honeymoon in Ireland in couple weeks.  You must very excited in the planning stages.  We are very very excited to be almost there.
We opted out of a B and B in Dublin and will be staying in Bewley's Ballsbridge for the 2 nights we are there.  I will be posting a report when we get back.  I will have to let you know how it goes.  Good luck with your planning!  And congratulations on your wedding!
-Christy

Melissa,

Congrats on your upcoming honeymoon in Ireland. You could consider Dublin your "splurge" and go for a hotel instead of a B&B. That way you can be right downtown with all the sightseeing on your doorstep. One way to jump start your trip is to save Dublin for last and spend your last two nights there.

Have fun planning. And let us know if we can help.

Michele

Lourda and Patrick are very nice hosts and they are conveniently located with a bus stop just a couple of doors away. You have a half dozen choices to get you into city center. Last year we took the bus from the airport to their place. It worked fine, but was a bit cumbersome with our luggage. This year they were our last stop so we felt it easier to take a taxi after dropping off the rental car, and again to get back to the airport. The taxi ride was either $15 or $20 euro, and very convenient.

Both last year and this the price was 35euro pps.
