I am planning a trip to ireland with 3 friends to play the golf courses in the West of Ireland (My Grandmother was from Charlestown and I have relatives there that I have never met. I am coming from America) Our lodging is accomodated for so my question is this.... We want to spend 4 days playing in Ireland and 1 day playing St. Andrews in Scotland, how does one travel from Ireland to Scotland and should I fly into Scotland then Ireland or Ireland then Scotland then home. Can I take a rail ferry combo and what is the time etc to travel. Any info on general cost would help as well. Also what is the best time of year to play the courses in the West of Ireland. Any light shed would be appreciated as I have just begun investigating but would like to understand the logistics so I can begin planning. Thanks, Brian
Welcome to the Forum. Quite teh whirlwind trip you have planned, Golf in two different countries over the course of a week.
Depending on which airlines you use, you could possibly fly into Shannon and then home via Edinburgh in Scotland. That would make the most sense. Call the Customer service number for the airlines and ask them what the difference in fares might be.Through Stenaline, you can do a Rail & Sail from Belfast. You would take the Ferry from Belfast to Stranraer and then the train from Stranraer to Edinburgh. From there, it is a matter of renting a car and heading to St. Andrews. I also believe that they have a stop in or near St. Andrews, which would mean a taxi fare instead of renting a car. I do hope that you have already made your reservation for the course far in advance. It is usually well booked ahead of time.
As to the best time to play the courses, not being a golfer I can only give you advice as a traveler. May & early June are less crowded. I have heard good things about the course at Lahinch.
What time of year is your trip? If it is open you shold consider May through September. The advantage of spring and summer is long dayligh hours.
What country are you coming from? Many times flying is cheaper and quicker than train and ferry. If you go to my Transport page you will find links to ferries and other public transportation. If you click through to the sites you can check prices and schedules.
If you are the one doing the planning for all of you, you will have your work cut out for you. If you want to play some of the famous courses like Ballybunion Old Course you should book well in advance. Golfing is very popular and people from all over the world go there to play.
