SO glad I bought Michele's book! SO helpful. Only complaint is ,I'm reading it line for line and not getting my itinerary worked!! So I'm doing that now and figure I can get help with B&B's later. Does that sound like the right plan Michele? THREE QUESTIONS to help firm out May 2009 itinerary to submit please:
Which BANQUET is best. Seems Bunratty more crowded & touristy, food average?, read that Dungaire Banquet is smaller, food better, lists readings, not sure if there's music & dancing.??
Want to attend at least ONEFESTIVAL of music, dance and food! Since we're thinking May 2009 to June 2 latest, is FLEAD NUA in Ennis the only one? And is it really worthwhile to fit in our schedule? How many days and which ones would be best to attend? From reading Forum, we'd have to make decision ASAP and reserve Accomadations if we can still find something.
What other SPECIAL EVENTS, FAIRS etc in May are worthwhile to go to? Planning to fly into Dublin out from Shannon to give us enough time. Not counting flying time we can have car for 2 weeks after we walk around Dublin. So another ? OK ! We'd like to stay inexpensively !!!! (yes, we know) for 2 nights, THEN rent car to start trip. Suggestions on:place to stay in Dublin(Steve's recommends hostels!); best way to get TO hotel WITH luggage; how, where to rent car from hotel.
Good idea to put the horse before the cart and work on your itinerary first. Then you can choose the B&Bs that fit.
Banquets: You will not get gourmet food at any of the banquets. They must feed hundreds of people in 45 minutes. It is superior to airline food, but you get the picture. The food is cooked fresh every day. You can visit the Shannon Heritage site for info about the menus, videos, etc. You can see my Dining page for brief reviews of the banquets. And, of course, I have complete reviews in my book. If you want music and dancing I would recommend Bunratty Irish Night held in the corn barn at Bunratty Folk Park.
Festivals: There are many festivals in Ireland. Go to Tourism Ireland's site and you can browse to your heart's content. However, Fleadh Nua is one of the best. I'm sure you would enjoy a day or two there.
Cheap Digs: Well, you get what you pay for. At hostels there tends to be lots of coming and going at all hours and could be noisy as well. Some of the airport hotels have low rates but you pay for those by having to bus into the city center and back. Bewley's Ballsbridge has a fixed low rate, but it is not city center and you have to have a long walk or public transport into the city center. As you see there are trade-offs. What is more important, expense or your time?
