Hi, Michelle. So excited to be here on your site at last!
I cannot stop thinking about our trip in April '09 -- and in my mind, I keep revising our plans as I read more and more.
So, here's my latest thought and wonder what you think: We're flying into Shannon and have 7 nights to stay before we must return. I'm thinking maybe we should stay in the same B&B for 6 nights (and then stay in the near vicinity to Shannon Airport for our last night to be ready for the flight home).
Does staying in one realllllllllllly great B&B for 6 nights and taking day car trips sound sensible? That way, we would have a home base and get to know our hosts much better.
If that makes any sense, are you willing to recommend that one very special B&B -- one that has big good beds (my husband is 6'2"), has incredible views of the sea, has the perfect breakfast, and fun-loving and friendly hosts, and is in a good location for driving daily if we wish. Oh, and it MUST be located near the best music venues (pubs, that is).
Thanks! Still enjoying your incredible guide book. It will be one I might loan out to friends, but will never give away -- until you write another, anyway.
Welcome to my forum! I am glad you are excited about your trip. Being enthustiastic will only mean you will plan a better trip.
Since this is your first trip to Ireland, I think you should stay at a couple of B&Bs and not just one. That way you can cover a bit more territory, get to know a few different hosts and get a nice mix of different places. How about staying in 3 different places? Your last night in Bunratty nearby the airport and then 2 other places.
If it were my trip what would I choose? Dingle and Kenmare. But it is your trip and you must decide what pleases you most.
Had a wonderful email conversation last evening with Annette at The Shores. I'm taking your advice, Michelle, and booking at least two B&Bs during our 7-night stay, in addition to the one night near the Shannon airport our last night. Certainly, The Shores will be one of our two home bases.
I've just read on another post here that you recommend no more than a 1 to 2 hour drive upon arrival in Ireland. That was going to be my next question to you! So -- just how harrowing is it to land (at Shannon), pick up our rental, and begin driving that hour or two south?
Thanks again for your wonderful forum -- I'm gaining lots of valuable info by just reading others' comments.
The Shores is wonderful, Annette is lovely and her food is fabulous. One note about The Shores. You had mentioned that you wanted to be near music venues. The Shores is not nearby Dingle town. It is on the north shore of the Dingle Peninsula in a rural location. Just an FYI for you. If you don't mind a couple of days in the country you will be delighted with The Shores. Annette has a queen room with balcony. If you require a king bed (called super king in Ireland) then I would suggest either staying elsewhere or getting a room with two beds.
In Kenmare my all time favorite is Sallyport House. They have two king rooms (one is a 4-poster bed) and a queen with a sitting area. Lovely views of either the Kenmare River or the orchard. If you don't need a view The Lodge is very nice.
Re Kenmare, I did look closely at Sallyport, but it seems a bit more steep in price for a three-night stay. The Rockcrest House seems lovely too, but is priced a little less., so I'm leaning that way.
Also, information states that Kenmare is approx 3-hours drive from Shannon. Is that even close to your estimation and, if not, how much time driving that first day should we REALLY plan on (assuming we head for Kenmare immediately after arrival in the country)? I though we might go the farthest south on our itinerary first.
Should I assume that an 11-mile drive to Dingle Town from The Shores (which is what Annette quotes) after dark is something a novice other-side driver shouldn't tackle? She did mention, too, that she's not certain she'll be accepting credit cards or vouchers beginning 2009 -- just FYI.
Still having fun doing the research and making plans -- in pencil, for now!
Contact Sallyport House, tell them I recommend you stay there and ask how much it will be for a 3-night stay. Sometimes staying 3 nights in one place will mean a discount. It doesn't hurt to try. In this case you get what you pay for. Another nice option is Loch Lein in Killarney (lake views).
You can probably get to Kenmare in 2 1/2 hours. But take the Cork road from Killarney toward Kenmare instead of the N71. It is much faster, wider and better; especially on your first day.
I really do not recommend driving over Connor Pass road at night after pub crawling. There is a nice pub near The Shores but if you want to be in the thick of things consider Dingle town itself.
You are certainly earning your money on me today! Thanks much -- as always. Your driving advice is invaluable -- and I'll let you know what I hear back from Sallyport. Thanks much -- as always.
Michelle, here's the response I received this morning from Sallyport:
Thank you for your E-mail enquiry regarding accommodation at Sallyport House for 3 nights in April , 2009. Please advise which dates you wish to reserve. At this particular time, we can offer you as follows; 1 room with King-size bed and full en-Suite bathroom (NON-SMOKING). Our rates per night are as follows;130 Euro per room per night which includes full Irish Breakfast.(Including taxes) If you wish to reserve this accommodation, kindly advise immediately in order to avoid disappointment. We would require a deposit of $100.00 made payable to Sallyport House. We do not accept credit cards but a personal cheque will suffice. A cancellation will incur a charge of 10% from your deposit with 21 days prior notice. If you have any further inquiries in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us.
I have a planning question for you: if I make all our own lodging arrangements, does it make sense to still use an agency for flight and car rental? I don't know what their "take" is when doing the planning for you. We're perfectly capable of booking our own air tickets, but I'm wondering how difficult it is (how easy to screw up!) to make car rental arrangements? Also, the flight the agent has proposed for us flies into Dublin as a connecting flight to Shannon. Is that usual?
Sallyport's website has rates from 75 to 85 per person. At 130 per room you would be paying 65 per person. What you need to determine is whether it is worth it to you to pay that for three nights and the fact that you are staying put for three nights. You will want to have a nice place to stay. But do check out The Lodge too. Also check on special offers at the Brook Lane Hotel.
If a travel agent can get you lower prices on flights and car, then it makes sense to use one. Ask about upfront fees. I'm sure they get a "cut" of bookings but it will not be a lot. There are a lot less flights to Ireland now. Many bypass Shannon completely and fly into Dublin. It all depends on the airline, schedules, etc. Ask questions and you will find out why they are proposing you fly into Dublin and connect to Shannon. If you cannot get a direct flight to Shannon then you will have to make a connection. You need to do your homework to see if using a travel agent is best for your needs.
Hi Rebecca, We go through a travel agent, here in Longview, WA. and she charged us a cheaper price than a travel agent in Ireland, 12travel.com She got us flight tickets into Shannon (this was in March 2007) and out of Shannon and got us a nice car - one step up from compact, non stick shift. Her fee was under $50. Also, when in Kenmare and you are looking for a place to eat, try Prego near the JAMS restaurant -- JAMS is not as good -- but you can see the large sign better, and Prego is a few doors down. Prego has a nice atmosphere and we liked the food a lot, especially the coffee! for any meal of the day. You will love going to Dingle, such a neat little town. We were pretty tired when we arrived in Shannon, due to our flight for Oregon to Newark with a 4 hr. layover, so we really enjoyed staying at www.adarecountryhouse.com which was very nice, excellent breakfast and perfect owners! Adare is not far from Shannon. It is not as close as Kenmare, as to getting as far as you want to be the first day, however. We also loved staying at Conneelys B&B, North of The Cliffs of Moher. Sheila, the hostess, is wonderful. She makes you feel so much at home and the rooms and the breakfast room are very nice. You can write to Sheila for more info. sheilaconneely@kinvara.com, & go to Kinvara.com to check out the little town and other points of interest: Kinvara.com http://www.conneelysbedandbreakfast.com/ will actually give you good info about her B&B itself. Her rates were, last year 36 Euros each/per night, including breakfast. (my husband just walked in and he thought we paid 60 Euros for 2--on her site she is showing from 40 Euros & up for ea/per nite, so write her and see, if you are interested. I guess I should have written sooner, since it is so close to your going! Anyway, you can use this info for your NEXT trip Have a Wonderful time and enjoy every minute Youngka

Thank you for your input. I believe the VA agent you refer to is the one I have also contacted. I've contacted one other agent, recommended by a traveling friend, to see how her services compare.
We'll be in Ireland in April 2009 -- which will make our long winter here more enjoyable. For Christmas, we're going shopping for good (sensible, weather-proof) walking pants!
Thank you again -- I'm really having fun and learning lots by reading everything on Michelle's site. It's a treasure-trove.
Visited Ireland in September, 2008, and had a wonderful 2 night stay at ATLANTIC VIEW B & B in Doolin. Our room looked out to the Ocean and you could also see the Cliffs of Mohr from our room. Five minute walk to Doolin Pier and about 10 - 12 minute walk to Gus O'Conners' Pub which, in my opinion, has the best Traditional Irish Music and other Irish music as well. Price was 105 Euro per night for a triple. Great breakfast cooked to order and the dining room also looked out to the Ocean.
Rebecca, the place in Doolin sounds like a place we should check into for the monthe of May next year! That gives me another idea -- THANKS! This site has really saved me more than once and everyone is very friendly. Have a great trip and good luck getting a good price on air fare. Let us know what you find out and where you are flying from and to. I think I had you confused with someone else who is leaving in two weeks, oops, as far as my saying you can save my info for next trip. You still have lots of time to fine tune your trip. Have fun!

Rebecca, OMG! I don't go to my private messaging site often. Glad you are going in April '09! We get a car, each time we go. I usually have an agency do the car rental and air fare. I just don't feel secure enough to go thru what you may have to do to get a car. We got the smallest car first, because of cost -- Will never do it again, way too small!! Next trip got a mid size and it was alright, but prefer the next step up, but don't want to pay the price Thank you for the Atlantic View site, looks promising if we get to go in '09! youngka

Anchoress, regarding the rain and things to wear or not wear When we visit we never take a coat, we love the weather in Ireland and will walk in the rain even when we went to the Oratory near Dingle Bay. If it is too hard a pour, we just find a place to sit and watch it and have a cup of coffee We live in Oregon and get a lot of rain and LOVE IT.......youngka

Sorry, when I tried to inspect Atlantic View there was no one at home. That often happens during my travels. It can be very frustrating ringing two dozen doorbells at B&Bs only to find no one there. I try to visit at a time when there should be someone there. But it doesn't always work out.
Michele, thanks for feedback. Sure looks like a nice place and so close to the ocean and the Cliffs. Price seems very good......may try and check it out next year. In the meantime Rebecca, go for it! Then you can let us all know what it is like! youngka

Dear noshot9: I'm having the devil's own time deciding between The Shores (while visiting the Dingle area) and Atlantic View. The Shores comes highly rated for comfort and ambience by Michelle, and their site is truly lovely -- but the Atlantic View is nearer the local traditional music scene, which also interests us. Michelle hasn't been able to find the Atlantic View proprietors at home, in order to give the place her white-glove and "princess and the pea" inspection, so I'm hesitant to count on what the website has to say about itself! And I'm a bit obsessive about all this because (1) it's our first trip to Ireland and (2) we want to stay in each location at least two nights or maybe three, so we won't be moving around a lot. So...are you willing to jump on here and give us the detailed low-down on the the Atlantic View? Youngka is wondering about it as well. Thank you SO much!
There is no decision between the Shores in Dingle and Atlantic View in Doolin since they are in two separate town and locations if I understood your question right. I have heard good things about the Shores although, in Dingle, we stayed at the Tower View B & B which was a very good experience. If in doubt about the Atlantic View B & B in Doolin, then you might consider the Doolin Activity Lodge. It is a short walking distance to Gus O'Connors pub from the other direction. It does not have the view that the Atlantic View has, but it was a good experience also. We stayed there the first trip through Doolin. The Doolin Activity Lodge also has a laundry service which is 10 Euros for 8 Kilos. Leave it with them in the morning and it is done and in your room when you return in the afternoon.
The Atlantic View had off street parking and as mentioned, easy access to the Doolin Pier and Music scene. The place was clean and our room had both tub and shower combination. Coffee maker, hair dryer etc. was provided. Clean towel every day, breakfast to order each morning and view of Cliffs and Ocean from both our room and the dining room. Food was excellent and hostess was very helpful.
You might want to go to "Trip Advisor" web site and see what comments are there for Atlantic view, Doolin Activity Lodge, etc.
The Doolin activity Lodge is hands down, my favorite when staying in Doolin.
Bear in mind that there are two Atlantic View B&Bs in the same area. There is one, close to the ferry pier, in Doolin and another, just up the road, which is closer to the Cliffs of Moher. The latter is not in close proximity to the pub scene.
Keep in mind also that in April, there will not be as much of a music scene in Doolin. In the summer months, you will find music there on a nightly basis. However, in the off season, music is more of a sporadic weekend thing.
As for Dingle, being a creature of both habit & comfort, I routinely stay at the Blooming Wildflower Cottage, which is in Dingle town proper, right on the harbour and in the thick of it all. They have one King room, which might be nice for your hubby.
Your comment about the frequency of traditional music in the pubs in April may be the deciding factor for me. I think I'd just as soon stay at the Shores and soak up the ambience (and take day trips as we please).
Michelle's forum has become a daily way of life for me! I'm so happy to have found so many friendly people willing to share tips. Thank you, everyone.
If you still want to spend time in Co. Clare, you might consider Ennis, as it would be more likely to have Trad music on a more consistent basis during the off season.
Doolin is a very small village. Though it has the reputation for being the "heart" of Clare music, there is very little else to capture attention.
Ennis, Galway, Dingle all are larger towns or cities which still have the Trad music pulse.
I am glad that you are happy here in the land of ItrelandYes! irregulars. We try to be as helpful as possible.
Music iisn't our only pursuit but it is one of the things Irish we enjoy. Because we're only able to spend 7 nights, I thought I'd try to concentrate on the things we both love -- good music, great scenery, the wilder the better, and getting to meet some friendly people. So that's why I've decided (well, Michelle has given some great advice) to spend our time in the southwest and staying more than one night in a place. Also, by the time winter is over here, my husband is exhausted and ready for some R&R. So I'm not going to run him ragged, just to see everything I possibly can in 7 days. He loves long walks in all kinds of weather and getting to know people. He's as excited about the trip as I am, but I also know that he'll need some down time.
Anyway, I had read that the Doolin area was known for its music -- thus my interest there. But when Michelle recommended the Shores -- even though it's a bit isolated and not in the Doolin neighborhood, I read up on and fell in love with the place. It sounds heavenly, and if it's off the beaten path a bit, that's fine. If we get lucky and happen upon a pub where the music is good and the people are welcoming, well, then, we'll have the perfect vacation!
