Need Itinerary help!! March 2009 trip!

My trip is quickly approaching and I'm so afraid of over-doing it by trying to see EVERYTHING.

Here are the basics:

Myself and my friend (both females, mid twenties) will be heading out on March 24th.  We arrive in Dublin at around 7:30am on March 25th.  We leave, from Dublin, on April 1st at noon.

The flight is the only portion of the trip that has been booked.  We will be renting a car, but I'm holding off on booking it until our Itinerary is finalized.

My initial thought is arrive in Dublin airport bright and early on the 25th and head over to Galway.  Work our way down and around the coast and back up to Dublin.  Deposit our car late on the 30th or early on the 31st back at the airport, spend the final full day and last night in Dublin so as to be able to catch a taxi to the airport on the morning of the 1st.

Here is a list of what we would LIKE to do...

  • The Burren
  • Cliffs of Moher
  • Ring of Kerry (??? Is this worth it?  I'm intimidated by the reviews of people being stuck behind tour busses)
  • Clare Castle (near Ennis... absolutely a must as this has historic family value to me biggrin)
  • Bunratty Castle / Durty Nelly's
  • Smithwick's Brewery (Kilkenny)
  • Guinness Storehouse (Dublin)
  • Jameson Distillery
  • Blarney Castle
  • Glendalough
  • St. Patrick's Cathedral
  • Trinity College
  • Suggestions??

Potential Cities we'd like to visit
  • Dingle
  • Galway
  • Dublin
  • Killarney
  • Kilkenny
  • Cork
  • Suggestions??
We are not too pressed about seeing Limerick or Waterford, to be honest.  Basically, we want to see the sights, but not be so tired as to not be able to go out in the evenings and enjoy the nightlift.  We're comfortable being a little bit touristy (ie - We HAVE to goto Blarney Castle), but we wouldn't mind not standing out like the hopeless American tourists that we are.

Any help / suggestions /etc would be GREATLY appreciated.

IrishEyes,

Welcome to my forum! What a pity you could not fly into Shannon and depart Dublin (or vice versa). It would save you much driving time.

Even though you realize that you can't do everything, you still have quite a long "must see" list. Given your short time in Ireland I really think you need to trim some things off that list. If I were to cut ruthlessly I would delete:

Galway
Cork
Kilkenny
Ring of Kerry

Are you arriving after an all-night transatlantic flight? If so, I do not recommend the long drive from Dublin to Galway. Especially if it is your first time driving on the left. You will be tired and disoriented on your first day. Don't drive more than a couple of hours.

Give us a bit more info and we will be happy to help.

Michele
