Advice requested: Too much planned, not enough time! May 09

Hello Michele,

I had actually posted a question to you on allexperts.com before finding this forum; I apologize for the redundancy!

My husband and I are traveling to Ireland this May to celebrate our 10th anniversary (both of us are of Irish descent, so this is a trip several years in the making for us).  We are flying into Shannon (arrival at 10am Thurs the 21st) and flying out of Dublin on Mon the 26th @ 9am.  So far, we've only made plans for our first day/night, which is to do the Bunratty Folk Park and the banquet in the evening.  We thought staying close to the airport for the first day would be wise after flying all night.

I've come up with a tentative list that goes something like this:

Friday - Cliffs of Moher (drive from Bunratty), sleep in Galway
Saturday - Visit Killarney (sleep in Killarney)
Sunday - Ring of Kerry, sleep near Blarney
Monday - Blarney Castle (very briefly), continue on to Dublin by way of a stop in Kilkenny.  Our only stop in Dublin will be to visit the Guinness Storehouse.

Family who have visited Ireland are cautioning us on the length of drives between towns and are also encouraging us to take the coach tours of the Cliffs & Ring of Kerry, rather than driving (we'll have a rental car) them.

Is this too ambitious?  I'm having trouble figuring out where to trim down.  I'm not sure if we'll have the chance to visit Ireland again for quite some time as our oldest child starts school in the fall, so I'd like to see the "must see" spots out of what I've listed above.  We're not much into metropolitan sites, but having said that, the Guinness Storehouse is #1 on our list of things to see.  I'm also wondering if we're able to spend some time in Killarney if we need to see Kilkenny as well.

We plan to stay in B&B's except maybe the last night (although we'd love to stay in a castle one night) and are interested in traditional Irish cuisine as well as hearing some traditional Irish music in the pubs.  That is, if we can find a way to not be in the car the entire time! blankstare

Any thoughts or suggestions on our trip would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen.

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary celebration!

Looking at your outlined itinerary, I would have to say that it is a bit much for such a short time frame.

I would suggest cutting Galway from the list. Everything else that you are wanting to do is south and east. You could do the Cliffs of Moher and then head to Killarney instead of Galway on friday. Killarney is the perfect spot from which to start & stop your Ring of Kerry drive. I would base out of Killarney for two nights, Friday & Saturday. On Sunday, head east, swing by Blarney Castle and up into Dublin. Make it an early start so that you might have time in the afternoon to explore Dublin. Turn in your rental car at the airport on Sunday and use ground transportation to get into Dublin. Driving and parking in Dublin is not a good way to end your vacation.

You will want to be at the airport three hours before your departure so doing any sightseeing on Monday isn't possible.

Michele will chime in, to be sure. This will get you pointed in the right direction. In Ireland, less is definitely more.

Slan Beo (Take Care),

Bit

I would like to throw in my 2 cents and agree with Bit about cutting out Galway. It is quite far out of your way if you're at the Cliffs and/or Bunratty. What's more, my father and I weren't particularly impressed with Galway City when we spent an afternoon there this past September. It's become very commercial.

Karen,

Given your very short time in Ireland I think Bit's advice is what you should take. By cutting out Galway you can take the ferry down to Kerry and on to Killarney for two nights. If you do that you will drive yourselves to the Cliffs of Moher not take the tour. If you want to take a coach tour from Killarney to the Ring of Kerry that will give you the right base for doing so. Also, consider doing Dingle instead of the ROK.

You will not have time for Kilkenny.

Because most of your time will be taken up with driving and sightseeing, I would not recommend a castle experience. When spending so much money you want to have time to enjoy the whole experience and ambiance. Or you could try Clontarf Castle in Dublin.

Am I correct that you are flying out of Dublin on Tuesday not Monday?

Michele

Thanks all for your replies.  Yes, Michele - I misspoke.  Or mistyped, as it were.  We're flying out on Tuesday morning. So we do have all day Monday to get to/see Dublin.  We aren't interested in sightseeing around Dublin so much on this trip, we'd rather concentrate on the countryside.  We figured flying out of Dublin would be the easiest way to see the Guinness Storehouse without wasting a lot of time driving.

We're kind of torn at this point about Galway.  The reason we were planning to go there in the first place was that my nephew recently spent a semester studying there at the University and loved it, and while he was there, my sisters visited and loved it as well.  We've purchased a laminated map of Ireland and have drawn & erased our route about a hundred times in the last two days!  no

I told my sisters we were planning to drive the Cliffs & Ring of Kerry (rather than do the bus tour) and they both looked at me like I was nuts.  Do you really get that much more out of the tour?  I just figured doing it on our own schedule would give us a little more time.  Otherwise, that's two days completely taken up - plus it kind of dictates where we stay at night since the tours start early.

I guess the real decision we need to make is whether we should cut out Galway.  I see the logic in that, so we'll have to think it all through.

Thank you for your thoughts on the castle as well - you're right, there's no sense in spending the money this time around when we'll literally be at each place long enough to sleep and not much longer than that.

Hello all,

Thanks to your helpful advice, I think I might have planned out something that will work better for us.  Please let me know what you think of the feasibility of the following:

Thurs am arrive in Shannon.  We have tix to Bunratty Folk Park & the banquet that evening.  How long should we allow for the folk park?  We are debating driving out to check out the Cliffs briefly when we arrive and then going to Bunratty.

Friday am, if we haven't seen the Cliffs yet, do that.  Either way, make our way down to Killarney via the ferry & Tralee.  I haven't read much about Tralee, so not sure if we'll be stopping to see anything there.  Spending Friday night in Killarney.

Saturday we'll take the bus tour around the Ring of Kerry, and stay in Killarney.

Sunday (I think this will be our long driving day) we'll get up early, check out Blarney Castle, continue north to the Rock of Cashel and then over to Kilkenny for the night.

Monday morning we'll drive up to Dublin for the day, staying in Dublin overnight and departing from Dublin Tuesday morning.

The only day I'm unsure about is Sunday.  Is there enough time for what we'd like to see?  I'd really like to see the Rock of Cashel, and honestly we're just stopping at Blarney Castle to do the tourist thing, kiss the stone and say we did it.

Thanks again!

Karen,

If you are arriving in Shannon at 10 am, you should be able to be clear of there by noon.  You could possibly fit in the Cliffs but that will depend on your jet lag. At any rate, with prior arrangement,  you can stop into your lodgings and drop off your luggage. That will help you get your bearings. The Park is open until half past five, with the last entry being allowed at 4 o'clock. Use that as your reference.

If you've not made your lodging reservations in Bunratty yet, I would highly recommend Bunratty Lodge. A lot of us here will vouch for MAry, her hospitality and her Brown bread.

In Killarney, I would like to suggest that you consider the Gap of Dunloe tour in place of the Ring of Kerry. The Gap of Dunloe tour is a magically memorable experience.

I would rather drive myself than be on a tour. The main reason for that is that my time is my own. If I want to linger, I can linger. If I want to stop for a photo, I can stop. There are advantages to taking a tour, to be sure. The main advantage being that the driver has the benefit of being able to see everything.

Whilst in Killarney, celebrate your anniversary with the treat of staying at Loch Lein Country House. You will feel well pampered, to be sure.

As for Blarney Castle, I am a huge advocate for their Gardens, especially at the time when you are going. However, you couldn't pay me enough to stand in line to kiss the stone. I am Irish after all there is no need for more blarney than that with which I was blessed at birth.biggrin That being said, my main complaints is the steep & narrow stairwell to get to the stone itself, along with the long lines. Instead, I enjoy meandering through the gardens which is usually fairly uncrowded.

I would rather see you spend your morning at the Rock of Cashel and then wind your way to Kilkenny. Kilkenny deserves the afternoon to herself. She is a charming town and one of my favorites. Lawcus Farms Guesthouse is my choice when I am in the Kilkenny area.

Look into turning in the rental at the airport on Monday before going into Dublin. As I said in my earlier post, it is best to avoid the madness of Dublin traffic & the high cost & sparse availability of parking.  disbelief

Karen,

That will work. You need a couple of hours for Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. What time is your banquet? In order to stay awake for it you might consider an afternoon nap instead of the drive. Jet-lag affects everyone differently. See how you feel, see what the weather is like and then determine if driving to the cliffs (about 1 1/2 hours each way) appeals.

Like Bit I am not enamored of Blarney Castle. They just have a great publicity machine going that hooks tourists and hauls them in. My personal preference for that day would be stopping to see Cahir Castle, Swiss Cottage (very romantic) and Rock of Cashel. I don't think you will have time to do justice to Kilkenny. Much as I like Kilkenny you might consider overnighting in Cashel.

Hopefully you will get to return again to Ireland for a longer time.

Michele
