Welcome to my forum! Have you rented a motorhome before and enjoyed it? If so, I suggest you start doing your homework now.

There are very few motorhome rentals in Ireland. You must also determine if you will be comfortable driving on tiny roads on the left with a big vehicle.

Call Tourism Ireland for more info and ask them for a Caravan and Camping Guide and info about renting motorhomes. Phone number on my Getting Started page.

Another good alternative would be renting 3 different cottages in different areas for a week at a time. Go to my Self-catering page for more info about that.

My normal approach is to rent the smallest car possible, and even then the size of some of the roads over there makes it a real thrill.

Driving a motorhome in Ireland? Wow -- I've never even considered that. I would like to see the trip report after such an experience. Perhaps you will do great.

I generally recommend the smallest car that fits you and your luggage. However, Shay may be an expert at driving motorhomes. My personal preference would be to rent a car and stay at three self-catering cottages around the country. More room in a cottage too.

It might be fine to do, but I must admit that renting a large motorhome never crossed my mind once when I have been over there. Of course I like getting off the beaten path a bit, and small cars come in handy traversing over Conor Pass or the County Clare coastal roads.

I agree with you -- bigger rooms, smaller cars! smile

Maybe they have some experience driving something that size, and if so, it might work just fine for them.

On our '03 trip with five women and their attendant luggage, we rented a Ford Tourneo which was huge by Ireland standards. I was the driver and loved it because other people gave us a plenty wide berth and because I was sitting up high and right in front (the engine was not in the front; not sure where it was, actually) so I could see the road and the countryside well.

Motorhomes are very popular here now... We call them snails; they travel slowly and have their homes on their backs.

Many come over from Europe in them; some are quite magnificent; and of course the versatility is appealing.

You see them early in the morning in the strangest places...

Yet they seem to manage many of the narrow roads; I met someone in December who was about to drive to Slieve League in one. Hope she meant to leave it at the car park and walk up...

A lot more motorhomes in Ireland now. As Anchoress said, very popular with European travelers...some of them bringing them over on the ferry - which means they are left-hand drives! Yikes.

We see so many parked all the time at the pier in Donegal Town. Anywhere will do.

They are not popular with the tourist industry or locals as of course they tend also to bring their own feed etc so spend little here.

And yes, left hand drive and they are having to drive on the wrong side just as you do.

But we wish that when they are travelling lanes they would pull off sometimes to let traffic pass.
