Best Time to Travel To Ireland

Hello,

My husband and I are taking my parents to Ireland for there 50th Wedding Anniversary.  This will be the first time to Ireland for my husband and myself.  My father still has relatives in County Down.  We will be flying in from Canada.  My questions are...  When is the best time to travel to Ireland and which is the best airport to travel into.  We will be renting a  car so we plan  on doing a bit of traveling.  Again, I have very little knowledge here and would welcome any and all suggestions.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Regards,

Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen,

First off, welcome to the forum! Maith Thu'! Well cone to your parents for achieving such a milestone!

I would suggest that you travel over in mid May to early June, as everything will be in full bloom and absolutely breathtaking. It is also just before peak season, so it will be less crowded and most of your lodgings will have a slightly lower rate.

Since your father has relatives still in Co. Down, you might consider flying into Dublin and out of Shannon, which will allow you to make sort of a horseshoe circuit. You might also consider flying into Belfast and out of Shannon though it might be more expensive to do so.

Co Down being in Northern Ireland, you will have need of two currencies, Euro and British Pound Sterling so keep that in mind as you plan.

If you give us an idea of the things that you wish to see and the length of your trip, we can better make suggestions on what you might liek to see and where you might enjoying visiting.

Mary Ellen,

I add my congratulations on your parents golden wedding anniversary. I'm sure that the trip to Ireland will be a highlight for them.

May is my favorite month to visit Ireland. As Bit said everything is blooming and the days are getting longer so more time to enjoy the scenery.

Flying into Dublin probably makes the most sense. From there you can be in Co. Down in a couple of hours. May I ask what town your relatives hail from? If you are not staying with your relatives I have some excellent B&B on my Lodgings page.

Go to my Getting Started page for info to jump-start your trip. Let us know if you have any other questions. We are always happy to help first-timers get their trips in order.
