Need a route suggestion for 13 days in May

My husband and I will be flying into Dublin May 16th and Leaving from Dublin on the 29th.  We are going to drive ourselves around (fingers crossed!) and would love some help planning our route.  We would love to see as much as possible with out feeling rushed.  Any suggestions?

Christymae,

Welcome to my forum! I hope you will take a spin around my website because it will walk you through the planning stages of your trip. Go to the
Getting Started page and be sure to call Tourism Ireland for your free books, brochures, map and vacation kit.

I also suggest you read and look at books about Ireland. You can get some at your local library and then decide which ones you like and purchase an up to date version. A couple of books about Ireland will be your best investment for your trip.

As you read and do your research, I suggest you make a list of places that appeal to you. Then put that list in order of what you consider most important. Look at your map to see where most things are clustered. The start putting an itinerary together. Connect the dots, so to speak. It does take a little effort but will pay off in the end. Plus you will have a trip that meets your needs and requirements instead of a generic one that may or may not appeal.

Since you don't want to feel rushed, I suggest as many multiple-night stays as possible in strategic areas where it makes sense to do day trips from.

Keep in mind that you will average 35 mph on your trip. Even though Ireland is a small country it takes time to drive around on small country roads.

We are here to help as your planning progresses. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Michele

Christymae--You will find this is really a neat site......by the way, I have gotten some really good vacation guides on amazon.com. Received one the other day, it was 2009 -- but still really useful ideas and descriptions of lots of places, only paid 63 cents and postage $3.50. Still a good research book to have. I have found quite a few research books on the amazon.com site. We are going to visit the area/s, also, where you will be going. We are pretty much doing as Michele suggested, staying at least a few nights in one place. Works really well. Good luck with the suggestions you will be getting and have a really nice time! youngka

Youngka,

I have gotten some good books on Ebay. Sometimes I even see my own book for sale there.

Ok so here is the tentitive plan for our route. We don't want a green blur but hope to see as much as we can. Any advice on the length in each location, too long too short? Different city in the same area?

Dublin 2 nights
Glendalough 1 night
Kilkenny 2 nights
Killarney 3 nights
Galway 3 nights
Athlone 1 night
Dublin 1 night (flying out early the next morning)

Also any estimates on how long it will take to get from place to place (if we drove at a cautious speed and leaving out the time for meandering around)

Christymae, I assume 35 mph on any Irish road as an average. Some roads you can go faster, but many are that speed or slower - especially if it isn't sunny out or at night! :)

I use www.viamichelin.com to estimate driving distances. I then figure adding at least an hour or so depending on what I want to see on the way, more for stopping for lunch, tea, etc.

I think you've got a good balance of places, and you're not rushing from one place to another, so you're not doing the green blur tour - good! :) I think you have a good plan set.
