Thanks to you all for your help in getting me past the starting post! Here is where we are so far and I realize May is coming right up. Does anybody see anything obvious here that we have missed or specific suggestions for one of the areas? We are taking seriously the "green blur" you've talked about and have tried to really limit ourselves to a few areas.
Arrive May 13 Dublin - I have booked 4 nights here near Merrion Square. Lots on our list here including the Botanical Gardens and probably Howth in addition to the more typical Dublin sites.
May 17 Sunday - pick up car (Dan Dooley seems to have the best prices for a vehicle for 4 - and my MC does still include CDW for Ireland; thanks for all the pointers about that!) - drive south through Powerscourt, Glendalough - overnight in Enniscorthy
May 18 Monday - make our way to the Skibbereen/ Baltimore area where we would stay 3 nights. This is where my family originates and my husband has a list of gardens, castles, islands that should keep us busy for 2 days. I think this is our longest drive but Michelin says it's about 4 hours so hopefully it's not too much?
May 21 Thursday - to Kenmare for 3 nights. Beara peninsula, Kilarney area
May 24 Sunday - Ring of Kerry to Dingle for 2 nights
May 26 Tuesday - overnight in Shannon airport area for an early flight Wed morning.
I am aware that the last weekend is a UK Bank holiday and we want to book those asap but so far I haven't made any reservations other than Dublin.
We are all 60-ish, avid gardeners, birders; appreciate architecture and history. Also on a budget so we're looking more for value than luxury but we don't mind a splurge for something really special.
Aside from rain wear, suggestions on what to pack? We live in the midwest - will the weather in May be about the same there as it is here? That is - anywhere from cold to hot?
It doesn't sound too bad to me! I think you are spacing your driving days nicely, though May 24 th confuses me - are you doing the Ring of Kerry one day and Dingle the next, or both on the same day? (impossible, I think)
I've been in Ireland in April and June. In April the day started out wet, misty - and ended up around 55-65 during the day, around 45 at night. June days could get up to 75 when we were there. Bring layers you can add or subtract during the day, and something waterproof. Good walking shoes that can handle some sloshing in puddles are a good idea, too.
Make sure the car you get can fit 4 adults AND their luggage! Sometimes the trunks/boots of those cars wouldn't fit a cat in them.
Suggestion: Look up Strawberry Fields in the Ring of Kerry. It's not too far from the south 'end', that ends up at Ladies' View - a tea house and crepes restaurant that is wonderful, and worth a detour!
We had great Chinese food in Dingle town at Tir na Ri (land of the Kings). The owner's last name means King in Chinese, his Irish girlfriend told us :)
In Dublin area, are you looking to travel up to Newgrange and Hill of Tara? If you like ancient sites, I would highly recommend them. Especially the hill - to me it was fantastic. It was like you could see the whole land of Ireland out in front of you!

It sounds like a nice, relaxing itinerary. You have mostly multiple-night stays so you won't be packing, unpacking and moving on every day.
From what I am reading, on the 24th you will start in Kenmare, do the ROK and end the day in Dingle. You will then spend two nights in Dingle. So one of those days will be for ROK and the other for Dingle. That's doable.
The Bank Holiday weekend starts May 29. It will not impact your trip.

Yes, thank you Michelle, for translating that. The idea was do the ROK "on the way" to Dingle where we would then have another day and a half before heading up towards the airport.
Thanks Green Dragon, for the specific tips!

Oh, I have gone round and round about that! I've tried looking up boot sizes of all the possible models they list then translating those into cubic feet and finding comparable US cars so I can wrap my brain around the sizes. THEN trying to decide whether we can shift with the left hand (we drive manuals here in the US... but "backwards?") I'm looking at Dan Dooley's Class G: Ford Mondeo, Renault Laguna, Toyota Avensis. Is anybody familiar enough with those to know if the boot will hold 2 large and 4 small (carry on size) suitcases?
The May 25 bank holiday I was referring to is UK, not Ireland. I made the assumption that it would still be more busy than usual since UK is so convenient for a long weekend? I will be delighted to be wrong!
Ford Mondeo = Ford Taurus Toyota Avensis = Toyota Camry
I think the Avensis has the biggest boot of the three, if memory serves me correctly.I know that there was enough room for myself and my friend, our duffles and camera gear.
I'm glad I got that right! Love Green Dragon's comment about some trunks (boots) not "fitting a cat". Give Bit's suggestions a try. I tend to rent tiny cars for just my husband and myself.
