What to see in the South/East

We will be on our way to Ireland in a few weeks. Last trip was 3 weeks spent entirely on the west coast, and this time we'd like to tour the SE quadrant of the island.  Definitely want to visit Glendalough, Kilkenny and the surrounding area, and the Rock of Cashel. We are interested in Heritage sights, ruins, scenery and pubs. We prefer staying in B&Bs and NOT moving each night. I'd like to avoid the bigger cities, but do like staying in towns some of the time, so we can walk to restaurants/pubs, shops, etc.

Does anyone have suggestions for the southern coast? Any other input about favorite sites or places to stay in the SE Counties would be appreciated. We will have a couple of weeks to relax and explore places off the beaten path.

Thanks! Marsha

Hi Marsha! Just a suggestion, why not stay in self catering, one week and use as a base. Then you don't have to unpack and pack several times? For two years we stayed in nothing but Self Catering and found it really convenient. Also, for cooking, eating purposes, when you feel like staying in, was very helpful. I'm sorry, but we haven't been to the SE section, yet. We really liked the SW, so were there quite a bit. Have a wonderful trip! youngka

Marsha,

I am delighted to hear you are returning to Ireland again. Kilkenny is my favorite city in Ireland. It is not too big or too small and is very historic. It would be a good base for several days and there is plenty to do and see from there. The Rock of Cashel is an easy day trip.

Some other places to consider are Glendalough/Laragh, Wexford, perhaps Dungarvan or Youghal. Have you taken a look at my Emerald Awards for this year? Parkswood in Passage East might interest you. Is Dublin in your plans?

Youngka's suggestion of self-catering is something you might want to explore.

I will ask the other couple their feelings about self-catering.  I do so love breakfast at a B&B smile but I suppose we could prepare our own version of it.  If I come up with enough day trips, I can probably talk them into it.

We are spending a few days in Dublin before we pick up the rental car.  We really enjoy the city and have not been there in quite some time.

I have been considering Youghal and will look into it.

I forgot to check your Emerald Awards and Parkswood.  I will do that right now.

Many thanks -- Marsha

Marsha,

I almost stayed at  The Old Boley in Wexford myself. Except it was too expensive for just two people. However, if you are sharing the cost it might just be a good self-catering place for you.

Hello shashie50,      If you are going to visit Rock of Cashel, you might want to check on this self catering place:

http://www.cork-guide.ie/mitchels/croughmore/history.html

It is just outside the city of Mitchelstown which is NE of Cork. There was another castle we toured Cahir, that was on our way to Rock of Cashel.  Very nice and in little town (Cahir).    Next to the river, across from the Cahir castle parking was a very good place to eat -- if it is that time of day.

Anne and Liam were such nice hosts and love to tell you about the house, because it was where Liam was born and his grandfather? built it.  There are three bedrooms, 1.5 baths, washer and dryer , nice sitting area/living room, and the firplace is just like when it was built with the hook for the pot and all.  Also, off the street parking.  The surrounding areas where the cottage is located is pretty like the picture on their site.  Very nice place to check on the computer.

Mitchelstown is not a small village and not a huge town and has all you need for restaurants, shopping for groceries and (I am sorry but can't remember) a very big store with hardware, dishes, household items, doctor's offices -- my husband had to use -- and Anne called and got an appt. for us the next day!

You may like to check the site for this B&B very near Rock of Cashel.

Have a great trip.   youngka

Croughmore, Parkswood, and The Old Boley all look great.  I'm having a little trouble getting my head around the distances --- can't make up my mind about what would be within "Day Trip" distance of these locations.

Parkswood is between the two, but is it easy to get in and out of that location?  I am out of town and do not have my best map with me.

Is Wexford to Cashel or Youghal too far?
Is Mitchelstown to Kilkenny or Hook Head too far?

It seems like a big deal to commit to a place for an entire week, so I want to be sure it is a good location for us.

Thank you for the help.         Marsha

Marsha,

You could certainly do a lot of the SE from Wexford as there are good roads connecting the dots. You can also go north to Wicklow. There are always pros and cons of self-catering. A couple of cons are staying put for a week and cooking your own breakfast. However, in this economy it is possible to rent a cottage for less than a week. A big pro is having a whole cottage to spread out in.

The plus with B&Bs is being catered to and not having to do anything like breakfast. It all depends on what you want to do.

Marsha,

I found that Croughmore was an excellent point from which to visit things mor south central and southeast:

Killarney, Cashel, Cahir, Cobh, are all within a two-hour drive. Kinsale would be about two & a half hours at the most.

I would base out of Wexford for a few days, in a B&B,  to venture down to Hook Head  & explore the bounties of County Wexford.

Bit, what about Kilkenny, for a self catering place,  It seems really central? ?  Could be fun going into town for breakfast, at different places to see how things taste at different places.  I have to admit, I love having breakfast served in the morning at a B&B. youngka
