Brennan is a very old and strong name in Co. Kilkenny. You might have some luck at the Rothe House, which houses a fantabulous collection of genealogical records.

Another excellent online source would by Jane Lyons' Kilkenny page. She really puts a lot of information out for research. I am glad to see her finally adding adonation button on to her pages. She puts so much time and effort into making sure the information is solid She also runs an Irish genealogy yahoo group Y-IRL. You might look into joining, as they have an extensive data base there.

As to the Co Kilkenny vs Co Carlow issue, it may simply be that the brother couldn't wait to be born at home. Kilkenny & Carlow share a border. Brennan is also prevalent in Carlow.

That should get you started at least.

You are very welcome. If I had more time before I left, I would delve into it more for you. Have you utilised the LDS website?

I know in your other post, it was suggested that you look into self-catering as an option. I know of a wonderful self-catering facility just ten minutes outside of Kilkenny, Nulty's. Each of the self-catering facilities is a restored farm building. They are very warm and inviting. Either the farmhouse or the Lodge would suit your needs, I believe. If you are just looking to B&B in Kilkenny, perhaps you might book in with Roseanne. biggrin

I wish I had more time to devote to this! The Brennans have a long and colorful story in Ireland, chieftans, warriors, outlaws.

It would certainly be tempting to book in with a Brennan!! As for Nulty's, we are just 2 couples, so I think the Stables would work for us...? It looks very appealing, and it is central. The self-catering option was not particularly well-received by the other couple, but maybe if I send them the link...

I have used the LDS website, and I also have a subscription to Ancestry.com. I've spent more time on my father's Tree lately, so I have to refresh my memory on my Brennan, Murphy, Slattery side. New records are being added online all the time and I really need to try again on a few of my "brick walls."

As far as I know, my Brennan's moved to Newfoundland about 1828, when my gg-grandfather was only 4-years-old. I know his parents' names, but not his mother's maiden name. Brennans still in Newfoundland tell me most of the old records there were lost because the town kept burning down! I hope to travel there too, one of these days...

Just before leaving home I found out I also have Murphy ancestors who came from Co. Wexford. The search expands!

Because we are here and had the time, we went to the National Library yesterday. No luck, but I had no expectation of success anyway.

Tomorrow we will leave Dublin and head for Laragh. Today is our first day of rain -- just a mist really. Hoping to have a nice day to explore Glendalough.

Just to let you know, we are staying with Rosanne in Kilkenny. She and her husband are very nice and the B&B is lovely. The location has been perfect for us. Thanks for the recommendation.

When I told Rosanne that I recently learned my Brennan ancestors came from Co. Kilkenny, her comment was: All Brennans do!

It has been cool and back and forth between rain and sun. It changes in a matter of minutes sometimes, which is good when you are waiting for it to stop raining and bad when you are walking across town! biggrin

We just keep saying the sunny weather will start tomorrow...
