Hello, I found this website the other day & have been on it ever since! I Love it. My daughter & I went to Derry July of 2006, she was a member of a Soccer team from upstate NY that played in the Foyle Cup Soccer Tournament. What an experience that was. We were not able to get much sight seeing in. Of course we walked all around Derry ( The Wall etc.). We did get to go to The Giants Causeway! WOW, that was amazing. Just that short experience I had , was all I needed, to fall in Love with Ireland. I have been homesick for it ever since.
My father's family is originally from Cork. It has always been a dream of my fathers to go to Ireland. Well this Aug. I am taking my parents!! We will fly into Dublin, stay 3 nights at Portmarnock Hotel ( my Dad loves to Golf). Then take the train to Cork and stay 3 nights there, I am still researching Hotels in Cork, I think I am going to reserve rooms at Hotel Isaac's because of the convenience to the train station. Our final night will be at The Premier Inn near the Dublin Airport.
We don't have an actual itinerary set, just to visit Howth, Dublin City & Cork City. I know that we will visit the usual spots, St.Stephens Green, Guiness Storehouse, Grafton St, Trinity College. Cork- The Blarney Castle, University of Cork, Shandon Bells & Patrick Street. Any other suggestions for must see places to visit?
We chose not to rent a car, I think the train ride will be nice to Cork & then back to Dublin. Then we will take taxi's or a bus.
I did follow some of your advice & booked the airfare & hotels on my own. It did save me quite a bit of money.
I will take any advice & pointers you all have to offer!
From Cork City, you can take the train to Cohb and also to Killarney. The Museum in Cohb (The Qweenstown Story) is very interesting and worthwhile.
Killarney goes without saying. Take a jaunting car ride through the National Park, visit Ross Castle, Muckross House and Gardens -- just to name a few. You could take the train back to Dublin from there, as well.

It sounds like a good trip you are planning. Bob's advice about Cobh is excellent. You can get the train directly to the museum. A day trip to Killarney would be fun too, provided you have the time. There is a hop on hop off bus tour of Cork City available and the Cork City Gaol is on the route and may be of interest.
From Portmarnock you can get a taxi to the DART station in Malahide and go into Dublin that way if you like.
Bob, Thank you for the info. We are looking forward to this trip. I appreciate your input, I want this to be a vacation of a lifetime for my parents. Deb
Michele, I Love your website!! I have found an answer to every question that's popped into my head. Thanks for the taxi info.,that will definitely make things easier, I am counting down the days. Deb
