Ireland itinerary for my mom's birthday!

I am taking my mom -she is 76- on her life long dream of seeing Ireland for her birthday.  We will have 2 weeks in August and I will be traveling with my 11 year old daughter.   I just ordered Michele's book and am trying to narrow down the itinerary so any help is appreciated.   She wants to see the beautiful scenery, castles, music, pubs and etc.  We are very easily pleased and have traveled extensively over the years but never to Ireland.   I will be driving (and yes I am terrified!).  I prefer to stay in central locations so I don't have to drive at night and we could walk to dinner - if possible.  We will be flying into Dublin on August 12 and leaving out of Shannon On August 26. So far, this is what I have considered:

Dublin -  4 nights (leave on Sunday, easier to pick up car and drive out?)
Kilkenny - 2 nights
Kenmare - 2 nights
Killarney - 2 nights (or is this too close to Kenmare - should we pick one location for the 4 nights and stay and do day trips?)
Dingle 2 nights
Doolin - 1 night
Bunratty or Ennis  - 1 night

We are all in good shape, so hiking, bike riding... and enjoying the outdoors is not an issue.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

Welcome to my forum! What a wonderful gift for your mother. I know it will be a trip to remember.

Your itinerary looks pretty good. Although 4 days in Dublin might be too much unless you are city people. I would do 3 nights in Dublin and add an extra night onto Kilkenny. There is much to see and do in that area including the beautiful Rock of Cashel.

Killarney and Kenmare are about 40 minutes apart. Choose one and spend 4 days there. I have some "specials" in both areas, so let me know what you choose.

In Kilkenny I recently stayed at Rosquil and it was excellent. It will be in next year's book.

Michele - thanks so much, I will arrange the itinerary according to your suggestions and I will definitely check out the specials in Killarney and Kenmare to help narrow down my decision on which one to stay at.

Do you recommend my picking up the car in the city location or at the airport, when we leave Dublin? I think I am stressing about driving over there too much and need the easiest way to get out of town!

Karen,

Usually I recommend picking up at the airport. But Dublin Airport is such a mess right now it may be better if you pick up at another office. Each car company is different. You will have to find out where their downtown offices are.

You mentioned that you ordered my book. Would you check your email? If you had a different name on your email address from your order, I was trying to confirm your address. Let me know if that is you.

I did receive my book, so I don't think that was my order. It is excellent and so helpful! I plan to book the car through Kemwel.

I have changed my itinerary accordingly and have a question about some of it.

Dublin - 3 nights - Family special at the Merrion
Kilkenny - 3 nights - debating between Rosquil and a hotel in town. (or is there no question to go with Rosquil?)
Killarney - 4 nights - Loch Lein is booked and they had a family room so this is perfect for us. I kept
debating between Kenmare and Killarney but Loch Lein came through with the best deal
Thanks for posting the special!
Dingle - 2 nights
Now, this is where I am stuck. Is it worth it for us to stay in Doolin one night or should we just stay the last 2 nights near Shannon. I was thinking I probably won't stay out late enough for the music with my mom and daughter so I am not sure if we should just do the last 2 nights in one place.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

Thanks for letting me know about the book. I guess I will send another email and hope they get in touch with me.

Of course you can spend the last two nights near Shannon. Although you will have a pretty long driving day when you leave from Dingle it will be broken up with sightseeing. Most pople like staying in either Bunratty or Ennis. Bunratty is a small village built up around the castle. Ennis is a larger town with more restaurants, shops, etc. The drive to the airport takes about 10-15 minutes from Bunratty. About 30-40 minutes from Ennis (depending on time of day).
