We're back

Very jet lagged, but back home.  I will do a trip report later (after laundry, bills, weeding garden, etc) but, as this was my first visit, just wanted to share a couple of things quickly for other first-timers:

- It rains.  Be prepared.  We didn't change any plans because of weather but we were glad we had taken everyone's advice and had good rain jackets + small umbrella that "lived" in my pocket.  Most days were half sun and half rain so don't reach any conclusions by looking out the window in the morning - or from listening to the weather report either, for that matter!  (I sat next to an Ireland native on our flight home and she said she didn't remember another May so wet as this one - we just luck out I guess....  hmm)

- We bought a 10Euro Vodofone SIM card for my phone.  It came with 11 Euro of phone credit (nice deal).  We used it a LOT - the flat tyre on a Sunday afternoon and no lug wrench (wheel brace) in the car had something to do with that... but it was very handy for calling about opening times,  B&B's, restaurants, etc.   I called the US twice and a 5 minute call was only 80 cents.   Incoming calls are free.  If you have a quad-band unlocked phone I recommend it highly.

- I had no trouble adjusting to driving on the left as a DRIVER, but I never got used to it as a passenger.  It was just terrifying to me.  Hence, I drove most of the time!

- It was a little scary how quickly I came to accept driving on one-lane roads between two stone walls as "normal!"  We only met a bus once and managed to back up (uphill) to a place wide enough for him to get around.   I just drove at a speed that felt safe to me then pulled off the road occasionally to let others get by.

- Bring at least 2 pairs of shoes (or boots).  If you're planning to do anything outdoors - even walk through gardens - they are likely to get very wet.

- Advice I heard before we left that is worth repeating: get the smallest car you think you can fit in (we had 4 people so ours wasn't very small) and never pass up a convenient restroom! wink

- The people were all extremely friendly and helpful.   All of our accommodations were lovely and we had a wonderful time.

- Our only disappointment was the difficulty of finding music that started before 10 PM.  (We are not late-night people.  We never saw one get going before about 10:15 - the locals laughed when we would ask at 9:30 when they were going to start!  It seems the musicians arrive between 9:30-10 and then have a pint or two before actually playing.)   There are some special "early" nights but those, we found out, are standing room only unless you book a table for dinner.  OBVIOUS HINT:  if you are interested in any of those, call ahead and book dinner!   We did go to the "folk concert" in Dingle at St. James Church -  they are held 3x a week (maybe more often in season?).  It cost 12E but was a wonderful experience; we got to sit down and they actually started on time!

That's all that comes to mind right this minute.  Many thanks to all of you who gave me such great advice!

Barb

Hi Barb

Welcome Back !!!
I leave 3 weeks from today and was just wondering where you purchased your Vodofone Sim Card.
Looking forward to your trip report. Have been enjoying reading Bit's reports.

Thanks,

There is a Vodafone retail center right in the arrivals hall at Dublin airport but it was closed when we were there so I got mine at one of the Vodafone shops on Grafton Street. (There were 2 within a couple of blocks, and at least one O2 shop across the street - they may have a similar deal.) If you are starting somewhere other than Dublin, see their store locator at
https://www.vodafone.ie/df/locator/ The whole transaction took less than 10 minutes.

Have a wonderful trip!

Barb,

Welcome back! I am looking forward to hearing all about your trip. I know the problem of finding music. We tourists are usually in bed sleeping away before it starts. Although there are a few venues (few and far between) that have earlier sessions.

Get over you jet lag and we will wait to hear all the details.

Hi Michele

Would you mind naming a few of those early music venues. I am an early to bed early to rise kind of girl however I am sure I can fit in some of the late sessions. Some of my best memories of Ireland was at Murphy's Pub in Dingle. The music session was so much fun we closed down the Pub that night.

Barb thanks for the info on the sim card, that will be very helpful.

Hi Barbara -

I think the "early music" opportunities vary from day to day but I can tell you a couple of places we knew of.  Hopefully Michelle can be more helpful.  Our B&B hosts were helpful in letting us know of these opportunities but we learned too late that setting out around 6 PM is already "too late" - they fill up rapidly.

In Kenmare, McCarthy's Pub and the Wander Inn both had early music (early meaning 7:30 or 8 PM) on a Thursday night.  I *think* that Foleys did, too.  There were also a couple that had Sunday afternoon/evening traditional music advertised.  There were big signs in the windows so a stroll down Henry and Main Streets would probably clue you in as to what is happening on a given night.

In Dingle, the Marina Inn had music going early on Sunday evening but it was already SRO by around 6.   We did not walk up the hill to the main "pub area" that night as exhaustion had already overtaken us from all the hiking we had done that day.

This was last week (May) so things may change in high season.  We were told that several venues tried to beef up attendance on slow nights (weeknights) by offering these early sessions to draw in diners.   We arrived in Kenmare on Thursday so by the time we figured this out, it was the weekend.  no In Dingle, we were only there 2 nights and so we opted for the Folk Concert Monday night rather than just hoping we could find something.  (It is widely advertised and you can get tickets at the Tourist Office as well as many local businesses - the TI had a program so we could see who the performers were for that particular night.)

If I had a "do over" we would book a table for dinner at one of those Thursday night places for 7:30 or 8 PM.   I don't know if they do this other weeknights since we were only there Thurs-Fri-Sat.

Barb,

When we were in Kenmare last September we were lucky enough to be in McCarthy's for a music session which started at 6-45, it was a Tuesday evening. It was great because we had our meal at a reasonable hour and didn't have to sit and consume drink after drink to fill in time and keep our seats. The musicians were very good, three became five, so it was all very laidback, like a jam session - the best kind of traditional Irish music.

Regards, Meredith

Thanks for the heads up, I will look for the signs early so that we might get lucky and catch a few early sessions. I will be sure to check the Marina Inn while in Dingle. Booking a table ahead of time is probably the best way to go if they allow you to book ahead. I will be sure to check with inn keepers on arrival, I know they are always willing to give good info to their guests

Thanks again
Barbara

In Galway, there is at least one pub on the pedestrian street that has an afternoon session (Taafes, orTigh Nectain). Both also have early evening music as well as the Quay that usually have a 7 - 9pm show.
