We did get your book this week. Thank you for checking on it. We have traveled extensively all around the world and normally choose 4-5 'bases' to stay in for 3-5 days and do day trips from those bases. Is that a good strategy in Ireland? We keep reading about the difficulty in driving there and the length of time it takes to get everywhere. We do not want to rush. We will be there for 23 days. Is that enough time to visit both Northern Ireland and the Republic or would it make more sense to concentrate on the southern part? Can you recommend 3-4 base towns for us? Dublin is a given. This is our first rip to Ireland.
Also, I have sent emails to a couple of B&B 's from your website and am not getting any replies. Is that common? We would prefer not to use fax or phone due to the expense.
It depends on what you like doing, but basing in several places for 3-5 days is a great way to do Ireland, IMHO. That way you aren't spending every day all day on the road in what Michele calls the "Green Blur" tour :)
With 23 days, I don't see why you shouldn't get some Norther Ireland and Republic time, but you will still have to be choosy about where you go. If I were to choose, say, 5 bases, and Dublin had to be one of them (I've been to Dublin enough that I can skip it, but it's worth it for first-timers!), I would choose either of these:
Just Republic: Dublin Kilkenny Kenmare Dingle Galway
Glad my book arrived. It will give you lots of good ideas for your trip. Which B&Bs are not answering your emails? Some are more efficient than others. Also, check your spam folder. Strange things can happen with emails to and from Ireland. I know because I am always emailing there.
Having a "home base" in Ireland is a good idea. Some people prefer B&Bs, guesthouses or hotels. Others on a budget often find that a self-catering rental is for them.
Green Dragon has kindly given you some good bases. In No. Ireland I really like the small town aspects of Ballycastle or some of the smaller places in Co. Down. Killarney/Kenmare is great for the SW. Galway or Oughterard for the west. Donegal or Letterkenny for the NW.
Why don't you get together a list of "must sees" to determine where most are clustered. That will help you determine your bases too.
