Musical Experience

Good afternoon Michele,

My husband and I will be taking our 10 year old to Ireland next summer for 3 weeks.  She plays the violin, fiddle, mandolin, piano, hammer dulcimer, and autoharp.  She wants to play with local musicians and attend musical festivals while we're there.  We don't really want to be tied down by a tour.  We want to wing it ourselves for flexibility reasons.  Any ideas?  I'll be ordering your book after I complete this email.

Thank you.

Doreen,

Welcome to my forum. It sounds like you have a very talented daughter. There are many music festivals all over Ireland in the summer. Many have impromptu "sessions" that happen during the day and evening. You can approach the various groups and musicians in advance with an inquiry about whether your daughter can join in for a period of time. It would be best to do that at informal sessions rather than planned events.

You will have to decide when you are going and then see what festivals are on at that time. Once you know it would be best to have reservations for accommodations. Things book up fast when festivals are on.

Let me know if I can be of any other help with your plans.

Michele

Dia Duit Doreen,

Welcome to the IrelandYes forum. We will do what we can to help you make this trip a success.

Given your daughter's aptitude with a variety of instruments, you might want to look at the Willie Clancy Festival and Summer Seissun, which is held the first week in July. This would give her the opportunity to participate in some workshops and to play with some of Ireland's best musicians. It is held in Miltown Malbay in County Clare.

You could self cater in Co. Clare for the week of the school and then spend the next two weeks exploring Ireland and staying in B&Bs. If you fly into Shannon and depart from Dublin, you could cover a lot of ground in two weeks and at a leisure pace.

Your upcoming trip to Ireland sounds like an exciting opportunity for your family, especially with your daughter's musical talents. Ireland's rich music scene offers plenty of chances for her to join local musicians in sessions, workshops, and festivals like Fleadh Cheoil. Staying flexible will allow you to seize spontaneous opportunities for memorable musical experiences. And thank you for considering my bookI hope it helps with your trip planning! Let me know if you need further assistance.
