We are arriving in Shannon 8/21 and have friends in Galway whom we need to contact. I would prefer to rent (or buy?) a cell phone... what price are we looking at?...for a pre-paid..??
You can pick up a cheap, basic phone and SIM card for about 49 Euro. The SIM alone, runs about 9 - 10 Euro, if you already have a tri- or quad-band, UNLOCKED GSM phone. The big players in Ireland are O2, Vodaphone and Meteor.
The O2 wbsite: http://www.o2online.ie offers a new-customer package for 'Speakeasy' Pay As You Go -- a 49 Euro phone with SIM and 50 Euro of call credit -- MORE than enough for a week or two in Ireland AND a couple of calls back to the US. No doubt Vodaphone and Meteor have compareable deals...
If you do a search of this site, you'll find LOTS of info on the subject.

Welcome to my forum. In addition to the info Bob provided, you can rent a phone if you prefer: http://www.rentaphone-ireland.com/ Another option is to buy a phone calling card. Only thing is you would have to find a public phone to make your call.
I hope you have a great trip to Ireand and fun with your friends in Galway.
