My wife and I are heading to Ireland to celebrate our 40th and 50th birthday, respectively. We plan on being there from Oct 28 -Nov 5 flying in and out of Dublin. We want to take in Dublin, the Wicklow area (fans of Ballykissangel), a few castles, Dingle area as well as some ancient sites. Being paranormal buffs, a Halloween ghost adventure would be ideal. I fear we might be biting off a bit more than we can chew. I would rather take our time traveling around. During that time of the year, are there places to see/or miss due to the weather that will help us get the most out of our trip?
Welcome to my forum. Not all sightseeing attractions will be open during your trip. So that might make a difference in where you plan on going. Also, the days will be short with sunset before 5 pm. It is not wise to spend time driving around Ireland in the dark so plan on being checked into your lodgings by 5 pm at the latest. With the long nights you can get in entertainment in pubs to compensate.
With only 8 days you will want to choose your overnight stays carefully. If you can fit in as many two-night stays as possible in strategic areas you will be better off. To get a head start on your trip, you can consider heading south to Co. Wicklow on your arrival day (provided you arrive early enough for a drive of a little over an hour). Spend your last couple of nights in Dublin. Now all you have to do is fill in the blanks for the rest of your time.
Some good places to stay in addition to Dublin and Co. Wicklow are Kilkenny, Killarney. That should give you a start.
Hi Michele, For two of our trips - stayed a week each time - we got a self catering place. Would this be handy for them - some place between Dublin and Dingle? Maybe not, forgot about the day light hours. I am not familar with the East part or in between. youngka

My parents and I went to Ireland last October and it was perfect. We went everywhere (we were there 16 days!) ...a little too long... My mom is a fan of Ballykissangel and we stoped by. We were so in awe that we didn't even go into Fitzgerald's! Enjoy!
Although I enjoy self-catering very much, with only 8 days I think the best plan is to stay at B&Bs, guesthouses or hotels. There are some very good specials going at the moment.
Michele, thanks, we mostly did B&B's this year and it was nice, I have to agree. We only had reserved one self catering place near Derry because we had the time. youngka
