Bus Eireann

Hello, this is my first post here.

We are seniors, and last year our son did all the driving. He won't be with us this May, so we will be travelling by Bus Eireann (public transportation). Does anyone have experience with them?

Our route starts in Limerick. From there it's on to Dingle Town (three nights), Killarney to Castletownbere by cab (three nights), then a bus to Skibbereen (one night), a cab from Clonakilty to Kinsale (one night), then busses to Ennis (two nights), and then SNN. All our b&bs will be close in, and near the bus stops.

Bronxbomber,

Welcome to my forum. I am delighted to hear that you are visiting Ireland again. May is my favorite month in Ireland. I hope you have time to see Muckross Gardens in Killarney as the rhododendrons bushes in May are as large as houses. And then there is the cherry tree walk. But perhaps you are just passing through?

I always have a car in Ireland but I know people who have used the bus system without complaint. It just takes longer to get around and you have to stick to their schedules. So bring your patience with you.

For your taxi trips, you might consider a hackney instead. With that you would agree on a set price in advance for your entire trip. It can be a lot cheaper than a taxi. Your hosts at your accommodations can help you out with suggestions of local companies.

Do you have family connections in Castletownbere? The reason I ask is that it is off the usual "tourist trail". But the Beara Peninsula is fabulous. I assume you will get a hackney for at least a day on the peninsula? You must go to McCarthy's Bar while in Castletownbere. There is a wonderful restaurant near Lauragh on Beara called Josie's. But it would require a taxi from Castletownbere. Maybe you could combine a trip to Healy Pass, Derreen Gardens (they have yellow rhododendrons there) and Josie's for luch.

I hear something is brewing at Tourism Ireland with regards to enticing more seniors to visit Ireland. They are cooking up some incentives. So stay tunned for more info as it becomes available.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Michele

Thanks, Michele. The hackney idea is great. I'm already on it.
No, I don't have family in Ireland. We had meant to get there last year, but the magic of Dingle prevented us. This time we'll have three days and nights in Castletownbere. And I won't forget Josie's.
