Ennis Fleadh Nua?

Having chosen Ennis for our last two days of vacation in May (the 22nd and 23rd), before we leave from SNN the following day, Monday, we were happy to learn that that Sunday begins a six-day Irish Trad festival called Fleadh Nua. Has anyone been there for it?

Also, as I am new to this forum, is it appropriate to ask about b&bs there? I am looking at the Grey Gables, because it is close in, and also very near the Bus Eireann station. (It got VERY mixed reviews on TripAdvisor.) I also like the Rose Cottage, which is also close to town, but a bit farther from the bus. Any other suggestions?

Bronx,

I think that Itallian Chauffeur (Bob) may have been to the festival in the past. I'm sure he will chime in if that is so. Since you will be in Ennis during the festival it would be wise to have firm reservations for those nights.

Yes, it is fine to ask about accommodations on the forum. Actually there are very few things that are off limits here. I have been to Grey Gables and was not impressed. I suppose it might be passable for a night but it was not my cup of tea. As everyone on the forum knows, I am very fussy and exacting. I would rather pay a few euro more for a nice place where I feel comfortable. I have not inspected Rose Cottage. I would recommend the Old Ground Hotel and Temple Gate Hotel. If you book well in advance you might find some good rates at either hotel.

Some other forum members have some recommended B&Bs in the area but they are too far out for you.

We were in Ennis for just a couple of hours during Flead Nua a few years ago. Although we didn't get to attend any sessions there was lots of fun going on in the busy little town. Here is the website http://www.fleadhnua.com/index.php
On another trip we stayed at The Temple Gate Hotel; I would recommend it - perfect location.

We stayed at Sleepy Hollow B&B, an easy 10 minute walk south of the Old Ground Hotel in downtown Ennis. It was 35 Euros/person, and was clean, quiet and comfortable, and a helpful hostess who provided all kinds of information about what to see and do in Ennis. I would highly recommend this B&B and the handy location. Dan

Thank you, Murph. I have now studied the Sleepy Hollow, and it seems to be perfect for us.

Bronx,

Will you let us know how you liked Sleepy Hollow when you return?

Sorry to be so late checking in, but ...

I haven't been able to schedule Ennis during May, yet, but Kelly (luckygreen) HAS:

Her post carries a link to her blog about time spent there in 2009.

Hope that helps.

Oh Bronx!, what a wonderful time you are in for! I would suggest that you find a place within walking distance to the pubs in town if your budget can afford it. There are sessions going on all over and it's great to be able to walk (or teeter) from place to place. Thanks for remembering me Bob!
