Cell Phones in Remote Areas?

We'll be traipsing around Allihies, Eyeries, Ardgroom, etc for three days. How is the cell phone reception out there? (In case, eg, we need to call a cab.) Are there any parts of the country that are out of touch? Just curious.

Bronx,

I had no problems using my cell phone in Ireland. However, I don't recall making any calls while I was on the Beara Peninsula. My phone picked up different systems, depending on where I was.

Bronx -

I've been carrying an active Mobile (CELL) Phone account with Vodaphone Ireland, since 2003.  While there are SOME nooks and valleys where there is little or no signal, generally speaking coverage in Ireland is almost universally available -- much better than here in the USA, where I have encountered LARGE stretches of "Dead Zones".

The Irish embraced Cellular technology early on.  Coverage is generally excellent, although you MAY be 'Roaming' on one of the three major Networks -- Vodaphone, O2 and Meteor.

But, don't take MY word for it ---  biggrin  biggrin  biggrin  biggrin

Coverage is good. Just realize that the terrain is working against you. We have to walk to the top of the hill to make most calls at our cottage.

We talk a bit about it at http://irishfireside.com/2008/08/02/54-using-mobile-phones-abroad/
