Authentic Castle Hotels?

Hi!  My husband and I will be going on our honeymoon to Ireland this summer.  We're starting to do our serious planning, and want to stay in an authentic castle at least one night while we are there.  I was reading your list of castle hotels, but I was hoping to find a castle with authentic looking hotel bedrooms, and other than the castles that can be rented out, I can't seem to find any.  We can't afford to rent an entire castle out.  Do you know of any castles that have authentic looking hotel rooms that don't require the entire castle being rented out?  Thank you!

KaliC,

Welcome to my forum. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage and honeymoon in Ireland!

When you say "authentic looking bedrooms" what exactly do you mean? Stone floors and walls, high ceilings or something else?

Most of the castle hotels have been updated to modern preferences and are upscale. There are some suites at Ashford Castle that are quite grand but that would be at the top of the rate structure.

Try looking at the following to see if anything appeals:

http://www.cabracastle.com/rooms.php

http://www.waterfordcastle.com/accommodation/

Most of the castle hotel bedrooms probably don't have the "old world ambiance" you are looking for while some of the rental castles do. Unfortunately people prefer their comforts more than the ancient settings.

Let me know if I can help with any other questions as your planning progresses.

Michele

I think this is a good time to mention Michele's blog post about Irish Castles as well. I think it's a must-read for anyone considering a castle stay.

Hi, thank you for your replies! Yes, I was hoping for a castle hotel that had the interior of the castle preserved, with stone walls and floors. Cabra Castle looks closest to what I was hoping for, with the stone walls in quite a few of the bedrooms. I'll have to look into it further, but it looks as though it is the closest we will find to an authentic castle interior. Thank you for all your help!

Here's a website that MIGHT be of interest -- note the Tower Rooms -- :

http://www.ross-castle.com/availability.htm

It's near Cavan.

Hi, thank you so much! Ross Castle looks very nice, especially the two tower rooms. With its antique decor, and close to authentic structure, it seems very close to what we were hoping for. Thank you for showing it to me!

Hi - I stayed at Ashford castle for two nights. If you send me your email I can email the photos to you.. It is beautiful and expensive, but I waited and actually got it less per night then my Dublin accommodations! (But it was also October.)

Hi, thank you so much for your suggestion! Ashford was recommended to us by a friend of my husbands, but unfortunately it's about 300 euros (or around there) per night in May, which is when we're going, and we don't have the budget for that. I looked at their website, though, and it did look beautiful! Perhaps if/when we visit again we'll be in a better financial situation.

That is a place I would like to stay at, but like you said, too much into the budget to make it happen.

Oh well, nothing wrong with a good B&B in my book!  smile
