I'm starting the dreaded "find a rental car in Ireland process" which is likely to take me months and months to wade through the possibilities and pitfalls!! I won't be using a world MC so the thread on CDW doesn't exactly apply in my situation but I'm using it as a cautionary tale of things to look for when reserving.
While doing my research I saw one of the rental companies tells you not to pay the M50 toll because they have the transponder in their cars and your credit card will be charged every time you use that road. Of course the rental company is charging you more than you would pay without their service.
Are there other roads in Ireland where you pay tolls and are they also barrier free? We will be driving north to Smarmore Castle, west to Westport, south through Doolin to Dingle, east to Kenmare and then Kinsale, Kilkenny and Glendalough. I think we will be on the M50 one time to the airport from Glendalough. I would like to know if there are other toll roads we might encounter.
Has anyone had problems with not paying the tolls by 8 pm the next day because you couldn't find where to do so?
There are a few other toll roads but they are not barrier free. The M50 is the one you must pay after the fact at either an outlet, online or by toll-free phone. Look at my "Hot News" page for complete info along with websites, etc.
Last October I paid my toll at the Hughes & Hughes bookstore in Dublin airport. I think all I needed was the license plate number. Very quick and convenient.
Good point. You definitely need to have your plate number. So write it down before returning your car. There is a list of where you can pay on the website on my Hot News page.
Thanks Carrie. Michele I think it was on your Hot News that I first read about the barrier free tolls and then saw the reference about it when looking at car rentals. I expect I'll find all types of helpful info here for planning our trip to Ireland. Thanks again, Deborah
