hi Michele My Husband and I will be arriving in Lairne May 20 for 2 nights. WE would like to take public transit to Giant's Causeway and area, what do you suggest? Do you have recommendations for a nice B&B?
Then we plan to travel to Ireland for the next 3 nights. Should we go by bus or train? We will rent a car at this next place to do day trips. We prefer to stay in one B&B so as not to be breaking camp every day. From different forums it would seem the west would be first choice for such a limited time.
As we are leaving from Rosslaire ferry 9 am on the 25th we would stay there the night of the 24th. We would take public transit to Rosslaire so as to drop the car where we pick it up. Or would you suggest that we pick a car up there, drive to our base town and use it to return on the 24th?
Could you suggest somewhere that would be a good base and that we could find a B&B? We are used to driving long distances at a time, and are early risers, so can pack a lot into one day. We are interested in scenery, quant villages, ruins, walking, and avoiding large cities. We are very excited about visiting Ireland for the first time. Thankyou for your assistance, Colleen
Welcome to my forum. I assume you are arriving off the ferry at Larne? There are bus services to the Antrim Coast. You may be interested in the Rambler Tours. I can't find operating dates on the website so I suggest you email them for details: feedback@translink.co.uk I have recommendations for places to stay on my Lodgings page.
It is your choice as to whether you will travel south by bus or train. They are both available. Go to my Transport page for links.
There is train service from Dublin to Rosslare. If you have no desire to see Dublin you might consider just taking the train from Belfast to Dublin and on to Rosslare, and then renting your car there.
With all that bus and train travel you probably won't have that much time left for sightseeing. Instead of going to the SW had you thought of seeing things in the east instead? The Co. Wicklow area is lovely as is the areas around Kilkenny.
Check out the info I have provided so far and you will have a better idea of what you want to do.
Thanks, Michele, for the info. This caused us to rethink our plans and to cancel Wales from our itinerary as we would rather spend the extra time in Ireland. So, could you give me your opinions on the following, please? Yes, we are arriving in Larne via the ferry from Scotland. Does it make sense to stay there for the two nights as we would like to hike the Causeway coast? Or should we bus to one of the other smaller communities further up the coast and stay there? As I mentioned here we rely on public transit. Then we would take the train (from Belfast?) to perhaps Galway or Shannon area and spend 5 nights there. Here we would rent a car to tour about. Finally, we will fly from closest airport right to London, instead of getting to the ferry in Rosslare, thus giving us more days in Ireland. We will save England and Wales for another time. With this in mind, if you had only 5 nights to spend, where would you stay? I thought a town not too far from an airport and car rental agency. In your previous reply you had suggested County Wicklow. Do you still think that is our best bet? By all reports and pictures we have seen, the west coast appeals, but the rest of Ireland looks beautiful as well. We are open to any ideas and suggestions you may have. Thankyou, Colleen
Bushmills is the nearest town to the Giant's Causeway. There is also a hotel right beside the causeway. I suppose where you stay depends on what part of the coast you want to hike.
If you take the train from Belfast, you will need to go through Dublin. From Dublin you can train to Galway or Limerick.
Once in the west you will rent a car, so that will make traveling easier. Since you are interested in Galway you might consider spending your five days in Co. Clare and Co. Galway.
I previously suggested Wicklow because of all the ferry logistics. But now you have changed your plans.
