Car rental in Ireland are a little expensive when you are only 24! Thinking about spending a day and a bit in galway without a car.. Is this a bad idea? What kind of public transit do they have?
We were in Galway City for the better part of 3 days last August. We parked our car at the B&B during the entire time. Of course, our B&B was conveniently located just 2 blocks west of the Spanish Arch, and everything we wanted to do in Galway, we did on foot. It is my opinion that whether or not you need a car, depends on where your lodging is...if you are staying all night. I can't answer your question about mass transit, as we didn't need it. Hope this helps

Galway is pretty compact. If you choose a close in located B&B you will be able to walk everywhere. There is also a bus system. You could base for a few days in Galway and do day trips to the Aran Islands and Connemara.
I try to not have a car in Galway. It may be one of the most difficult towns in Ireland to find a parking spot, and as Michele mentioned, it is easily walked and, I think, more enjoyable in that mode.
If you can get there without a car, I would advise it. You won't miss the hassle of trying to park it at various locations that you could simply walk to. Also, there many B&Bs just west of town that are on a direct bus route that drops you off at city center. It's a great way to get there if you don't want a car involved.
