ISIC plus Inis Oirr, Inisheer, Inishere =)

First of all, I recently received my ISIC card in the mail (I am a 'mature' student) and am excited to see what kind of savings that will bring. Even just the student price on the Heritage Card will go a long way in helping the ISIC pay for itself.  If anyone has used the ISIC, what other types of discounts did you find?

And my question about Inis Oirr- has anyone been there as a day trip? Did you rent a bike or just walk? If you rented a bike- did you wind up just pushing it around? (ha- I guess I'm just wondering if an hour into my day I would be wishing I hadn't bothered with it). Of course, on Google Earth the pathways look smooth- but some of the pictures I've seen suggest it may be easier to just walk...

IF you just walked, can a person (with no mobility issues) make it all the way around the island at a leisurely pace in 4-5 hours?

Inis Oirr is the smallest of the islands. To walk the full trail on teh island will take around four hours. It is about 10/12km. You could use a bicycle and cut the time. the roads aren't well maintained and the trails a bit rough. I have both walked and cycled it. I found walking to be much more my style, as a photographer.  There is so much to see that I felt I had missed things when I cycled.

Have you considered staying overnight on Inis Oirr? That is an experience in and of itself. Radharc an Chláir, run by Brid Poil, is my favorite B&B. It overlooks the Cliffs of Moher.

Great info from Bit. Also after the horrible winter weather the Irish roads took a beating. Cold, rain, floods all took their toll.

Ah, thank you both!

Bit, I will look into staying on the island. I looked at countless photo's of all three but Inis Oirr is the one that I kept going back to. smile

Michele, I hadn't thought of that- with the weather affecting the roads beyond the flooding.

I'm trying to keep as much wiggle room in my daily plans as possible anyway (I want to for sure have a car to drive and a place to sleep each night but during the day- a tight schedule would make me itch!) and it sounds like allowing a little extra driving (or cycling!) time to allow for bad roads is a smart idea.

I do understand that  pull. For me, it is Inis Mor. I cannot even begin to think of a trip over without a visit to Inis Mor. I leave another piece of my soul behind whenever I leave there.

Inis Oirr also pulls me but not at the same level. I know that in another time and place, I was a daughter of the sea and the Arans was my home.

There should be an email contact for Brid on the Inis Oirr site which I provided you. That is the best way to reach her.

Wiggle room is always good. If you are traveling solo, you are more able to wiggle than within a group.
