I have a friend who has made arrangements to rent a car from Enterprise in Dublin this month. It's a small, manual transmission rented for one week. My friend said he got it for $200 (not euros) and he's sure that includes insurance, etc. Now, he is a member of what ever 'club' Enterprise has for best deals, but that still seems like an amazing price.
Has anyone here worked with Enterprise? Do they tend to have hidden fees added upon arrival? Or does this sound realistic?
If you look at the top "sticky" post about Rental Car Rip-offs you will see that I have contacted Enterprise several times. These are the questions that they DID NOT ANSWER:
When declining CDW is there a "charge" or "hold" put on the credit card? If so, how much?
Is there an extra charge for declining CDW?
Are there any other charges for declining CDW or any other rules that you have about it?
Is there a charge for canceling a reservation?
Is there a charge for changing a reservation?
Is there an "airport surcharge"? If so, how much?
Is there a "road tax" fee per day? If so, how much?
Is the car to be returned with a full tank of petrol or empty?
What other charges apply that are not included in the quoted price?
If a company cannot answer simple questions then I won't deal with them. So I have no idea whatsoever of their rules. They will not tell me. That makes me very suspicious that if I did rent from them there would be lots of surprises at the car rental desk on arrival. If there are extras to be added onto the Enterprise quote look for a price 2 or 3 times higher.
You will have to let us know of your experiences when you return.
Wow, Michele, thanks for the info. My husband has been dealing with the rental car issues and I think we're all set for our own trip, but I couldn't recall seeing any discussion about Enterprise and was surprised by the low number that my friends came up with.
I'll pass the info along to them and will definitely let you know what we learn from their experience with Enterprise in this case.
Maybe you'll finally get some answers in this roundabout way! :)
I've actually rented from Enterprise -- TWICE. The first time was in '99 - a MONSTER, Lime-Green VW Carravelle, 9 passenger people Mover (Van)! I drove it EVERYWHERE -- Galway, Limerick and Cork cities, took it across the Kilimer/Tarbert Ferry and over mountain bohreens in West Cork that would likely turn your hair white! I even parked on an upper level of the Parking garage attatched to the Jurys Inn, in Galway.
Ignorance is/was BLISS! It was the time of my life!
All that has NOTHING to do with your question, though, Jeanne -- but, THIS does:
I did some poking around the Enterprise site ( the .ie, Not com) and found that the rate quoted is PROBABLY correct -- with SOME caveats ---
Insurances included is Third-Party Liability (Mandatory by Irish Law and paid by the company), Theft (of Vehicle ONLY) and DW, or Damage waiver (what we all like to call CDW). It does NOT appear to include 'EXCESS' (Super-CDW), DOES cover Road Tax, but, like Michele, i haven't got a clue as to whether or not it covers the Airport Facility Charge, nor what their fuel policy is -- because I can't find hide nor hair of a 'Terms and Conditions' printout.
If there IS an Airport Fee, it will be about 30-35 Euro. 'Excess' runs 20 Euro per day, Vat Included, so when they arrive jet-lagged and harried they will LIKELY see an ADDITIONAL charge (140 Euro for 'Excess' -- 20 X 7 days -- PLUS 30 or 35 Euro, for the Airport Fee, PLUS somewhere between 40-80 Euro for the Initial Tank of Fuel ( which MAY, or may NOT, be refunded, if they bring it back full ) -- for a total of about 210 Euro -- in ADDITION to the $200 rental.
Even then, your friends will be responsible for the FIRST 100 Euro in damages, and tires, glass and under-carraige damage is typically EXCLUDED. This is a General Commentary on Car Hire Insurance, though. Someone would need to grill Enterprise for THEIR SPECIFIC rules.
Good luck with THAT!
Bob

You're the best! Thank you for your detective work. The things that you uncovered were some of the little details that I thought might pop up out of nowhere.
I really want my friends to be prepared for what ever may hit them at the car rental counter. I'm sending all of your information to them ASAP.
Wonderful research by Bob! Renting a car in Ireland is a can of worms. Open the can and they all wriggle out. Bob calls Ireland car rental searches "kissing the frog". And no the frog does not turn into a prince!
