Michele, So sorry about your canceled trip. We hope our date of May 16 will still work out - surely the ash will fly away by then, and we'll hope there's not another eruption!
I have your book and I'm really enjoying it. We are staying 6 nights at Adare Manor villas. One of our trips will be to Dingle and one to the Ring of Kerry. I'm thinking we should spend one night on the road instead of going back to Adare. We want to drive the Ring clockwise, so what do you think of driving straight to Killarney, driving the ring, then spending the night in Killorglin or Tralee? We will just want a clean place, two bedrooms each en suite baths, for the one night. We'll get up and start for Dingle the next morning.
Do you have ideas of places in each of these towns? I've been web-surfing and I'm wondering if we should book ahead or just take our chances and wait until we're actually on the road.
Posting again about a place to spend the night. Just found the Tralee Townhouse in Tralee. It gets very good reviews at tripadviser. It would be a good location for us. What do you think? Thanks, again, Cherry
The Adare Manor Villas are beautiful. I spent a week self-catering in Adare (in one of the thatched cottages in town) and found plenty to do from there.
You are wise to have an overnight in the SW if doing both the ROK and Dingle. Tralee would put you closer to Dingle and a straight shot to Connor Pass. My only recommendation there is Brook Manor Lodge, a couple of miles from town.
In the current climate I don't think you will have any problems finding B&Bs on the fly.
Thanks, Michele. Another related question if you don't mind. Our thinking was to spend the night because we wanted to do two different things in the same area (Ring of Kerry and Dingle). We also want to do the Aran Island trip and the Burren. If we're going to go to the expense of spending one night on the road, should we do it for the southernly trip or the northernly trip? We stayed a week in Ballyvaughn a few years ago, and I know there's plenty to do in that area. Thanks! Cherry
The Burren and Galway is closer to Adare than ROK and Dingle. All things considered you are probably best overnighting in the SW.
The Aran Islands take most of a day. There are ferries going from Doolin, which is in the Burren. I would suggest taking the ferry across the Shannon early. It will avoid Limerick rush hour traffic. If you want to come back the same way get a "return fare" - meaning round trip. Do the Aran Islands and see how much time is left. The Burren is generally a drive through destination. With the long days in mid-May you might fit both in but it will be a long day.
If you are starting out from Adare, I can't really see why you would want to stop for the night in Tralee -- going there couldn't possibly save you more than about 45 minutes driving time, over just returning to Adare.
if it were ME, I think I would get an early start on your ROK day and then drive it Counter-Clockwise -- If you get to Killorglin at or before 10 AM, you should be ahead of the Tour buses.
If you WANT to spend a night 'On the Road', Kenmare or Killarney are MUCH more interesting locations to do THAT, rather than Killorglin or Tralee.
Don't get me wrong, I once spent a week, self-catering in Killorglin and enjoyed my time there very much, but it would NOT ordinarily be high on my list of places to recommend for a 'one-night' stay.
Many people (including Michele ) REALLY like Kenmare for its small-town ambiance and charm. I have friends and acquaintenances in Killarney -- so my bias is a bit more self-serving, I suspect.
Well -- that's MY 1 Euro cent worth ...

Between starting and finishing my reply you and Michele have both weighed in -- and, I see that I MISSED that the overnight was to be BETWEEN ROK and Dingle!
Go with Michele's recs --- there are more than 30+ reasons why SHE has a book and website -- and I don't ...
