What time to be at airport for a connecting flight?

We are leaving Detroit Metro for Newark, and then connecting to Shannon from there. We are trying to figure out what time we are supposed to be at Detroit. We've read some places to be there an hour and half early, and some that say 3 hours for international travel. Since our first flight is just to Newark, we aren't sure if that is considered international or domestic.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!
Maureen

Maureen,

Your originating flight in Detroit will be considered the first leg of your international itinerary. Your passports will be checked there and your luggage checked in. Whatever your airline tells you is what you should do. If they say 3 hours in advance, then be at Detroit 3 hours in advance.

Hi, My husband works for TSA and I just asked him your question. He said because your flight is w/in the U.S. it's domestic and you won't go through Customs until you are ready to fly to Ireland. As Michele said, the best resource is the airline. You should call them to find out when you should be at the airport.

Have fun!

Thank you both for your advice!
We only have an hour and half layover in Newark. I guess we'll go through customs then and hope that is plenty of time!

Actually, Customs and Immigration when LEAVING the U.S. is fairly cursory.  Customs usually is more concerned with what you are bringing INTO the country, rather than what you are taking OUT ...

I would be more concerned about a 1 1/2 hour lay-over on the RETURN flight, unless you are departing Shannon, where you should pre-clear Customs before boarding, thus eliminating the process at Newark.

You're welcome Mahart...be ready for customs when preparing to depart from Newark. As long as you don't have a one way ticket purchased with cash you shouldn't have any trouble! Cheers! Maggie
