My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in 2011 for our 10th Anniversary. Granted we are in the initial stages of planning, and learning ALOT.
We were planning to rent a car and do a self tour for 10 days. However, after reading the posts on renting cars---I am beginning to back track. I have a couple of questions:
1) Is renting a car a smart idea? We are the type that love to get off the beaten track and travel at our pace.
2) Are there any honest companies with legitimate terms that the good folks here on the forum might recommend.
Welcome to my forum. And congrats on your anniversary next year.
I assume you found your way here while researching car rentals in Ireland? Don't be alarmed. The info presented here is to inform not scare. We are of the opinion that being informed is best. That is why we are involved in lengthy discussions about car rentals - because there are so many rules and each company has different rules.
1. Yes. Renting a car is the best way to see what you want in Ireland while setting your own pace. With a car you can go off the beaten path with ease.
2. Try Dan Dooley. They will tell you the terms and cost up front. Most of the others have "add ons" that you must add up for your final cost.
3. You are probably in shock after reading the lengthy discussions on the forum. So sit back, relax, take a deep breath and let us help you with the process. We have been there, done that. Ask what questions you want. That's what the forum is for.
It's better you felt this tinge of panic now, rather than when you reach the car rental desk at the airport (that's when many people learn about these details).
Because you're doing your research now, you'll know what kind of insurance you want, what you'll be accepting and declining, how you'll be paying and, hopefully, there will be no surprises.
It's the not knowing beforehand that gets me worked up.
Drew, By all means don't be worried. Just read Michele's tips and you'll do great. I rented a car for 13 days and it was great to get off the beaten path! I rented it on a mastercard which allowed me to waive a collision insurance (it's been two years so I don't remember all the details).
Have fun and don't worry. When you have a question post it back here and you'll receive some good sound advice from Michele and others who are extremely knowledgeable in Ireland.
Thank's everyone for your responses. All of the information out there about travelling to Ireland is a bit overwhelming, but I am finding that the forum here is about as user friendly as it gets.
We will be checking and reading regularly as we put our trip together.
We try to make the forum helpful and friendly. After all, you need friends to steer you in the right direction in Ireland. Most of the members here have been to Ireland multiple times and are planning their next trips. You could say we are addicted!
