We have been to Ireland both in May and late September and we prefer September. We ran into few crowds and lots of good deals as it was the end of the high season. We have been fortunate that we ahve had great weather in September, no total washout days. Everything is a nice shade of green! We will actually be in Ireland again this September-almost the same dates! Maybe see you there!

I'm in the same boat as you. I am currently rescheduling my trip to Ireland too! I touch briefly on the differences between travel in spring and fall on the Irish Fireside podcast Michele vs the Volcano.

They are obviously different seasons with the associated differences. Days are longer in May and shorter in Sept. Spring as opposed to Fall. Different flowers and plants are blooming but it is still emerald green. Not a ton of tourists in either month. The trees may even be changing.
