Trim to Ballyvaghan- stops along the way?

My family will be driving from Trim to Ballyvaughan on the 2nd day of our trip.  Does anyone have suggestions for good stops along the way?  So far the possibles are:

Muillingar (Belvedere House)
Kilbeggan (Locke's Distillery)
Clonmacnoise (Definite)

I've heard Athlone isn't anything special and ourside of a short detour to Clonmacnoise, I don't see anything that is a "must".

Thoughts?

Zstep,

You are correct that Athlone is not on the tourist radar. It's a workaday town with what the locals need. I would concentrate on other things. And you have them all figured out already. Clonamcnoise is a must on that route. I really enjoyed Belvedere House & Gardens. I loved the legend of the "Jealous Wall". Belvedere is a little south of Mullingar near the golf club. Last time I was there it was not well signposted so just head for the "golf" sign.

You might fit in Locke's but I would put it last on your list. If you don't have time for it, that's okay.
