Mom and I are heading to Ireland in October. Tour Group CIE will pick us up in Shannon by noon to bring us to Ennis, where are tour begins. Our flight will take us from Boston to Dublin (with a five hour layover), and then a flight to Shannon.
We'd like to look into a train ride, and spend our time traveling and not hanging out in the Dublin airport... Mom has been doing some research (HI MOM!!!), and found a train ride but we don't know if it's the best route..
So, to my question, can you tell us the best way to travel (on land) from Dublin to Ennis or Dublin to Shannon Airport???
Train would be a pleasant way to travel across the island. You'll have to consider several transfers to make it happen though. Not tough ones, but unfortunately it's not a straight shot. I haven't gone that route in a while, but here's how I remember it...
You'll have a 45 or so minute ride from Dublin Airport to Heuston Station.
Train to Limerick (I've had to transfer at Ballybrophy before, but it depends on the route/schedule).
In Limerick you'll have to decide if you want to bus/taxi it to Shannon or train/bus/taxi it Ennis (the trainline between Limerick and Ennis/Galway just reopened this year and the schedule is limited - I suppose that new line also means you could go Dublin-Galway-Limerick as well).
You could also consider the bus... it'll be cheaper, you'll see just as much and the buses are pretty nice, and depending on which busline you choose, the schedule can be set to take you from airport to airport without transfers.
Great information, thank you! It looks like we have a lot of planning/coordination to make this happen. I'll start with looking at a transportation from airport to airport... TY!!!
I would get the Bus direct from Dublin Airport to Galway and then either train or Bus to Ennis. JJ Kavanagh run regular buses between Dublin and Shannon Airports.
Welcome to my forum and thanks for the tips for Maggie. You can make hyperlinks and do many other things if you click the "Advanced Editor" button just underneath the Quick Reply box. It will open a new box (with whatever you already typed into the box) and give you lots of options for fancier things including emoticons.
I see from your profile that you live in Ireland. We appreciate the input of someone who lives in Ireland year round. Even though I spend a couple of months in Ireland every year there is nothing like living there to know all the intimate details of the area you are in.
