traveling soon--west or north? hmmmmm

     Hello Michelle and all travelers,
I am happily making my 5th trip to Ireland, leaving in less than 2 weeks and still haven't decided on the itinerary.  This forum has been a great source of info and inspiration in the past.  Hoping for new insights or opinions!

Here is the little bit of planning so far :) 9 day trip

day 1--  arrive Dublin, pick up car at DanDooley (thanks for the helpful info here), staying with friends 30 miles north of Dublin for a few days.  Will visit Malahide, Slane, Ardgillen, and Trim castles, Newgrange?  (will not go into Dublin)

day 4---  where to go?  North and then west?
Northern Ireland:Glens of Antrim, Ballycastle 1 night, Giants Causeway,Dunluce, Bushmills distillery,carrick-a rede bridge....
head sw to the Connemara -- to Clifden 1night
then to Doolin  1 night--  see the Cliffs of Moher from the water
Loop Head-- last time there the road ended into a path and we didn't know if it were driveable & turned around...
                 Dingle?  1 night
back toward Dublin, fly out day 9

OR:    head west only and plan on Clifden, Doolin, Dingle?

Northern Ireland is so spectacular but I do love the Connemara and it's rained my last 2 times there, never making it to Clifden.

day 9 fly home out of Dublin early am
Way way too short of a trip but you take what you can!

I'm traveling with my sister who is leaving the planning to me. She has never been to Ireland outside of Dublin.   Castles, pubs, music and adventure.  Keeping an open mind and don't want to be overextended.
      Trying not to overplan!   ha!
thanks in advance for your thoughts, I'd appreciate ideas both positive and negative about these travels.  Michele, this forum and your site is such a WEALTH of great info.

Right!   Also searching for brown bread!

Fran,

Welcome back to my forum. Did you have a different user name before?

Since you have traveled to Ireland 5 times before, you know the realities of traveling around the country.

When counting your days it seems you have four actual days for sightseeing, since you will need to be back at Dublin on Day 8 for your flight out the next day.

I would choose either Northern Ireland for those 4 days or the west. I would not try to get to Dingle. I know it is a tough choice. There are so many wonderful things to see and do it is tempting to want to do too much.

Hello Michele,

I couldn't remember what user name I had previously.
Thanks for the reply.

There is a huge map of Ireland on my wall now and I've seen that I have been tempted by wanting to do and see too much. You are so right about that. Trying to recapture the wonderment of my previous trips, I think. Must remember that driving is about 35miles per hour, too.

I have been reading many of the forum posts and learned been reminded of many things about travel in Ireland. It's been over 2 years since my last trip.

I think keeping Clifden and Doolin as western destinations will be best over our 4 nights and give us lots to see as well as relax with a pint at the end of the day. The driving days to and from north of Dublin will be long but we can take our time.

Must remember to keep it simple! I know I am fortunate to be able to take this trip.

:) Fran

p.s. Can you drive to the very end of Loop Head?

Fran,

Good plan to keep it simple with a limited number of days. Yes, You can drive all the way to the end of Loop Head. I think you must have been on a wrong road previously. The correct road is paved and ends at the lighthouse at Loop Head. There is parking nearby and you can walk around the whole head. Be sure to stop at the Bridges of Ross. You can walk across a sea arch (take the pathway to the left).
