Sneakers and pubs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Michele--I just heard from an unreliable source that pubs won't allow people wearing "white sneakers" into the pubs at night. Is that true? What other kinds of dress codes are there? Thanks, Erin

Hi Erin,

That is a very unreliable source! You can wear whatever you want into pubs any time. Basically there are no dress codes--just be comfortable and be yourself. If you are going out to a fancy dinner at a castle you might have to dress up, but other than that you are safe in sneakers, jeans and a sweater. Tourists have no dress code.

There was a line in one of my favorite "Masterpiece Theater" episodes of the "Irish R.M." that comes to mind. The lead character had been up all night fighting a fire in his evening clothes. Once the fire was out he realized that he had just a few minutes to get to a wedding he was supposed to attend. His clothes were covered in smoke and soot and torn everywhere. His wife asked if he was still going. He looked down at his disaray and said, "Why not? After all this is Ireland!"

And that about sums it up!

Thanks again, Michele, for relieving my worries! Now I don't have to pack another pair of shoes! Erin

Be warned though - some of the more upmarket bars (and those with nightclubs) may not let you in wearing white sneakers. Play it by ear.

Erin,

Just avoid the "snooty" night clubs. Take your money and your white sneakers where they are appreciated! Most of the pubs don't have dress codes. Pack light and you will be glad you did!

You might need to pack another type of shoe, only because it could rain on your sneakers and they take a while to dry.

I use my hair dryer to dry my shoes. I have 101 other uses for a hair dryer too!

2. Cold bed? Warm it up with a hair dryer.
3. Drip dry clothes still damp? Guess what dries it out?
4. Chilly room? You'd be surprised how fast a hair dryer warms it up!

Don't get me started...

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I am notorius for overpacking so I will not be bringing only sneakers--probably (hopefully...) only one extra pair. I agree with you, Michele--I don't do well with dress codes so if I ever get denied access because of by shoes, I will just take my business elsewhere! Erin
