Central location for exploring the west?

My wife and I are a planning a trip in Sept or October.  We will spend a couple of nights in Dublin, then head out to explore the countryside.  We normally prefer to have one base of operation, and day trip out from there.(as opposed to changing hotels regularly) Can you recommend any locations (Ennis?) that would be well suited for exploring the West without too lenghty of daily drives?

JTC,

Welcome to my forum. Good idea to have a base from which to day trip from. But before I answer you can you tell me what you would like to see? We are talking about an area going from Limerick up to Westport. Depending on your interests you might need two bases.

I would suggest a 2 airport plan. Dublin and Shannon, fly into one and out from the other. Ennis is a good base and one of my favourite/best known towns but Galway would be a better base giving the Connamara as well as the Burren for options. As Michele has said it might be a good plan to have 3 rather than 2 bases depending on your dates/length of visit
