First Time to Ireland, what is too long is smaller towns?

Hello, Thank you for the wonderful site.  It has been most helpful in planning this trip.  My husband and I are flying into Dublin and out of Shannon in a few weeks and I am unsure of my current itinerary....I think after too many hours in books and online.

We arrive into Dublin at 10:30 am and I was planning 2 nights Dublin, 2 nights Killarney, 2 nights Dingle, 2 Galway (not necessarily in that order) however my husband is concerned (from a fellow co-workers advice) that 2 nights in these smaller cities is too long.  We are in our late 20's and enjoy a good pub but also hiking, biking, and him golf and me horseback riding.  Am I off base with my itinerary?  Someone suggested adding Kinsale? Thank you for any tips!!

Leah,

Welcome to my forum. Glad you are enjoying it. You are not off-base with such an itinerary.

What your husband does not realize is that day trips can be made from each place. Also, how will you do golfing or horseback riding if you are packing up and moving on to another place? You must have time to fit in activities and sightseeing.

You could stay in each place for a week and still not see everything they have to offer. So don't worry about running out of things to do and see.

Don't take the co-workers advice for a "green blur tour" of Ireland. Stick with what you have now and you will have a better trip.

4 bases for 8 nights is a good plan. Everybody has their own best bits of Ireland so stick to your plan and find your own rather than being swayed by other voices. The places you have chosen will give the opportunities to do the things you want, my only concern would be that if you have an early flight you will want to be in or near Shannon for your final night.

Thanks Michele and Tony for the reassurance! Our flight isn't until 11:30am so I was thinking that Galway would be okay as long as we left around 7am.

Leah,

7 am is the latest you should leave from Galway. They want you to be at Shannon Airport 3 hours before flight time. Keep in mind that you must return the rental car. You might have your husband drop you off with the bags at the terminal while he returns the car (or vice versa if you are driving). You can wait for him inside near check-in. There are free luggage carts for your use.

Two night stays are a great idea.  Not sure what the co-workers are thinking.
