first trip May 2002

I am just beginning to plan my first trip to Ireland for two weeks the end of May 2002. I'm thinking of flying into Dublin and then zig-zaging around the coast up to Sligo and then flying out of Shannon. I plan to stay at B&Bs, wherever and whenever possible.

A. Does this make sense
B. Suggestions on what to see and do (I like the ancient mysteries vs the touristy stuff)

Great Time to Go

Hi Jackie,

First let me say that May is a great time to go to Ireland. The flowers and trees will be blooming, little lambs are in the fields, daylight lasts till 10 pm and it is possible to get good weather. I still have a tan from my trip to Ireland last May.

Your plan is very doable. I assume that you will be going to Northern Ireland as well as the Republic? Some places that instantly come to mind for you are Newgrange at Bru na Boinne (lots of tourists but since it's one of the oldest buildings in the world you can see why), the Hill of Tara, Navan Fort near Armagh, the Giant's Causeway, Boa Island near Kesh, Grianan of Aileach in Co. Donegal, as well as Knocknarea, Carrowmore and Creevykeel in the Sligo area. You should also see one of the best gardens in Ireland: Mount Stewart Gardens on the Ards Peninsula. This is just the tip of the iceberg!

As you can see there will be plenty to keep you busy. Also take a look at my links page under the heading "History" and you will find many interesting web sites associated with ancient Ireland: www.irelandyes.com/links.html

You have plenty of time for researching your trip and by reading up on what you want to see and do, it will greatly enhance your enjoyment of Ireland when you are there. So look at plenty of web sites, go to the library and check out books on Ireland, and consider getting my book, which will guide you all around the Emerald Isle with advice on great B&Bs, sightseeing, restaurants, pubs, music, shopping, etc.
