Our Irlenad trip leaving next week????

My husband and I will be in Ireland for two weeks with a group from his work. We have one free day on Friday Aug 10. We are staying near Shannon Airport the nights of Aug 9 and 10 and flying back to the states on Aug 11.

On our group itinerary we spend an afternoon at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park when we first arrive. We visit the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren on our way out of Shannon to Connemara. On our way back to Shannon from Killarney, after the Ring of Kerry , we go to Tralee and visit Blennerville Windmill and the exhibition of the coffin ships. Drive through Adare and visit the Flying Boat Museum in Foynes.

We had thought about driving to the Dingle Peninsula but decided we would be spending all day in the car. Besides I found out the Dingle Races start on Aug10.
We are now thinking about driving to the Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle, the Swiss Cottage and maybe the Glen of Aherlow.

Does this sound reasonable? Should we add something, leave something out, or can you suggest something better? If we do the places I have named what route should we take? We want to have a good day, be able to take our time and not be driving all day.

I know this is long but thought you would need all the details from the beginning.

Thank you for any and all your help.

Donna

Cashel & Cahir

Hi Donna,

You're right Dingle would be very difficult to do from Shannon and you would be in the car all day. Your choice of Cahir Castle, the Swiss Cottage and Rock of Cashel is excellent. I would drive directly from Limerick to Cahir on the N24 and visit the Swiss Cottage first. Since they only take small groups through on the tours sometimes the wait can be a long one so the earlier in the day you get there the better. Afterward -- if the weather is nice -- there is a beautiful walk along the river to Cahir Castle, which you will enjoy very much. Tour the castle and then perhaps pop into the Galtee Inn for Irish stew or the Cahir House Hotel for something more substantial.

From there head north to Cashel and tour the Rock and, if you want, Hore Abbey. If you still have the time and inclination then from Cashel you can take the N74 toward Tipperary and an unclassified road to Bansha and on to the Glen of Aherlow. The R513 will take you to the main N24 road and back to Limerick and the N18 to Shannon. If you have had enough sightseeing and want to skip the Glen of Aherlow just take the N74 to Tipperary and the same road you took previously back to Shannon.

I hope you have a delightful day. Let us know how it goes!

Happy travels,

Michele

Michele...... Thank you for your advice. We will do our best to get to the Swiss Cottage early and also see Hore Abby. We will let you know how things went when we return home. Thanks again..... Donna and Gomer
