I am glad i found this site, there is allot of good info!
This will be my first time in ireland and i will be going solo. I have done a ton of solo traveling in the past (spain, mexico, thailand, prague). I used to live in amsterdam also. The long and short is like traveling by mysefl but i like to go places where i can meet people and meet others to travel with...
I am planning on going for 7 or 8 nights around the 20th of October, i think i want to be back in atlanta for halloween (or would it be better to spend it there???)
I am looking for some trip advise that fits my style :) (active 38 yo single male)
I definetly want to hit dublin and galloway but beyond that i really dont have much of an idea. I want to see the sights but also i am looking for a good social time as well.
I love the pub scene so that is a given!
So, any and all advice is welcome, i have been looking forward to taking this trip for sometime and i want to make sure i do it right!
i haven't decided on a whether or not i want to deal with a car.. How much does a basic car usually run for a week?
I know i don't need it for Galloway or Dublin. I would assume it really depends on what areas i want to see outside of the major metro areas.
i ordered your book, i think that will give me some better ideas on what i want to do as well.
I think that staying in 3 major areas with day trips may be a good first trip. I try to not pack too many things in as i want to relax and not be rushing around the whole time...
I see you are from the Atlanta area, small world, i live near downtown atl.
It is impossible to give you a figure for a "basic car rental for a week". Anyone who has ever planned a trip to Ireland knows that prices are all over the map. I suggest you look at my car rental page and the post about car rentals on the forum (sticky topic).
Without a car you greatly limit where you can travel. My transport page wil llink you to Irish Rail and bus systems. You also need to keep in mind that with public transport you need to be in places that provide day tours via bus. Killarney, Dublin and Galway are best. But in off season fewer tours will be available.
Direct from Atlanta to Dublin is Delta. They do a code share with Air France but you will be on a Delta flight. The fare is not too bad for a last minute flight. Booking well in advance gives you better rates.
Sure, you can rent a car in Ireland on the spur of the moment. Sounds like you will mainly be "winging it".
ah, thanks for the heads up! i can get skymiles then...
i went ahead and booked it, i am always spur of the moment.
I am probably going to wing it. i may just get a car as i am thinking of heading to kilkeny straight away and then back to dublin for the weekend.
once i have you book i will map out a more detail itenerary. I like to keep my options open so i will probably only book my first few nights hotel then see what i want to do when i get there...
i am really exicted now that i have my tickets, fully commited!
