Aer Lingus Transatlantice Flights

Can you or anybody out there please post your experience with Aer Lingus as a long haul flight? I have taken it short haul from London to Dublin and found the plane to be old and bare, bare bone. It looked like the inside of an old bus and felt like it as well.

How do their flights from the US compare with the likes of Continental and British Air? Are there tvs at every seat with different movies to watch? Are there regular meals and snacks served? Comfort of the seats?

I have flown Aer Lingus from Chicago on both of my trips to Ireland ( 2000 & 2003).

On our first trip , the plane was just like any other plane I had been on. Not the newest thing , but not old and rickety either.

On our last trip - standard plane on the way there, but BONUS!! on the way back we got a newer plane that had just been retrofitted with TVs at each seat!! (It was so new , that even the flight attendants weren't fully trained on how to use them) - I think it is hit or miss , as to whether you will get one of the 'tv' planes or one of the older ones.

Food on the way over /back is typical airline food - If you check their website, it should say whether your flight has food service, and if so if it is a meal or snack.

Debbie, there is a website called AirlineMeals.net that will show you pictures of actual meals served on a number of flights. You might just find your specific flight or one close to it to determine what type of food you could be served. The travellers actually take pictures and describe and rate the food.

I haven't flown Aer Lingus across the Atlantic for a decade, since I usually go through London. Fortunately Debbie was able to share with you her first hand info on her last few flights.

If you're happy enough going through London or elsewhere, I would avoid Aer Lingus. Whilst there's nothing hellish about their flights, they're just not worth the money you pay for them usually.

If I had the choice I would fly either Virgin Atlantic through London or bmi through Manchester.

I have had totally different experiences with Aer Lingus than Darren - I found them EXTREMELY cost effective.

The first trip I made was in 11/2000 and it came to 350 per person, RT from Chicago-Dublin-Shannon.
My most recent trip was in 4/2003 and we paid 384 RT from Chicago.

I don't know about you, but I can't fly from Milwaukee/ Chicago to many of the places in the US for what I was able to fly to Ireland. I know I travel in Shoulder season, but it is still a good deal. We priced out using FF miles on NWA/Continental , and it would have been more expensive to try to get 2 free tickets and 2 purchased tickets than I was able to get on AL.

The bonus for us was that it was a straight flight from Chicago over. No annoying long Layovers ( Dublin was maybe an hour if that
